Abstract
The similarities between high-conflict separation and domestic violence situations are the subject of debate in scientific and clinical circles, and cause considerable confusion in professional practice. While these families are likely to use the same psychological and legal resources for post-separation support, the issues and implications for intervention differ for each situation. Based on a rapid review of the literature, the aim of this article is to provide a portrait of assessment and intervention practices adapted to families living simultaneously with issues of severe separation conflict and domestic violence. A total of 66 clinical and scientific documents dealing with family mediation, psychological or psychosocial expertise in family matters, parent coordination, educational groups for parents and family psychotherapy were analyzed. The results enable us to identify practices that should be encouraged with this clientele. The importance of systematic and continuous screening, as well as the need to adjust interventions to domestic violence issues in order to ensure the safety of victims, are agreed upon across the various interventions identified. Psychosocial and legal professionals should be better trained to assess the different types of domestic violence and adjust their intervention accordingly. Little evidence exists to confirm the effectiveness of current professional practices. More studies are needed to support existing interventions and to develop specific interventions for families experiencing domestic violence.
