Fragmentary and modest, Augusto Monterroso’s work has not received the same attention as that of his friends Juan Rulfo and Julio Cortázar. Yet his writing offers original perspectives on major cultural issues that remain relevant to the present day, including that of Latin American identity and difference. Engaging with Mignolo’s decolonial theory and Moreiras’s critique of regionalism through close readings Monterroso’s short prose (1959-98), this paper argues that it is precisely the use of a fragmentary aesthetics that allows Monterroso to anticipate the politics of (de)coloniality and representation that would only come to crystallize in academia in the twenty-first century.

Fragmentaria y modesta, la obra de Augusto Monterroso no ha recibido la misma atención que la de sus amigos Juan Rulfo y Julio Cortázar. Sin embargo, su escritura ofrece perspectivas originales sobre temas culturales que siguen siendo de gran relevancia en la actualidad, incluidos los de la identidad y la diferencia latinoamericanas. A partir de un diálogo entre su narrativa breve (1959-98), la teoría decolonial de Mignolo y la crítica del regionalismo de Moreiras, este artículo sostiene que la estética breve de Monterroso anticipa las políticas de la (des)colonialidad y de la representación que no se consolidarían en el mundo académico hasta el siglo XXI.

El propósito de este ensayo es situar al pintor José Gutiérrez Solana en el contexto de las relaciones entre anarquismo y vida cultural en las primeras décadas del siglo XX. En concreto, se exploran las conexiones de su obra literaria y pictórica con los postulados del anarcoindividualismo, una de las corrientes del movimiento libertario en la Península. Se ahonda, asimismo en la interpretación La tertulia de Pombo (1920), una de las pinturas más conocidas del artista, argumentando que, en el contexto ideológico mencionado, el cuadro se puede leer como una pintura de historia y como un alegato político.

The purpose of this essay is to place the painter José Gutiérrez Solana in the context of the relationship between anarchism and cultural life in the first decades of the 20th century. Specifically, the connections of his literary and pictorial work with the postulates of anarcho-individualism, one of the currents of the libertarian movement in the Peninsula, are explored. It also delves into the interpretation of La tertulia de Pombo (1920), one of the artist's best-known paintings, arguing that, in the aforementioned ideological context, it can be read as a historical painting and as a political statement.

Granada, poema oriental (1852) da nacimiento a la literatura orientalista en España. A diferencia de los autores que le precedieron, José Zorrilla introduce una agenda política para reescribir el pasado y responder a los retos que el orientalismo francés presenta a la identidad española. A través de un análisis de la representación que esta obra hace de los reyes musulmanes y su política en contraste con la reina castellana Isabel, este ensayo concluye que Zorrilla es el primer autor que ofrece al público un argumento que, aunque formulado desde el conservadurismo, permite integrar el pasado musulmán en la identidad nacional española.

Granada, poema oriental (1852) gives birth to Spanish orientalist literature. Unlike authors before him, José Zorrilla introduces a political agenda in rewriting the past to confront the challenges posed to Spain’s national identity by French orientalist literature. Through an analysis of the Nasrid monarchs, especially Boabdil, and the Castilian queen, Isabella, this essay concludes that Zorrilla is the first author who formulates a conservative argument integrating Iberia’s Muslim past into the Spanish national identity.

The 2008 novel La burladora de Toledo by Angelina Muñiz-Huberman is the fictional recreation of the wandering life of an individual who lived in sixteenth-century Spain as, at various times, a man and as a woman. The novel at first appears to have two themes: the main character’s unrecognizable gender and their highly syncretistic and extraofficial religious life. My thesis is that in La burladora gender and religion, which initially manifest as two concerns, are facets of a broader concept that the narrative promotes. Burladora assigns a positive value to identities that are fluid, mutable, and indefinable.

La novela La burladora de Toledo (2008) de Angelina Muñiz-Huberman es una recreación ficticia de la vida errante de un individuo que vivió en la España del siglo XVI como, en diversos momentos, mujer y hombre. A primera vista la novela parece tener dos temas: el género irreconocible del/la protagonista y su vida religiosa, sumamente sincrética y extraoficial. Según la tesis que propongo aquí, en La burladora el género y la religión, que al principio se manifiestan como dos preocupaciones, son en realidad dos facetas de un concepto más amplio que promueve la novela. La burladora reiteradamente les asigna un valor positivo a las identidades fluidas, mutables e indefinibles.

In 1534 Feliciano de Silva published Segunda Celestina, the first and most influential of several sequels of Fernando de Rojas’s editorial hit. In this entertaining and light-hearted fiction, Silva brings the old bawd back to life and reinvents the original story to rectify its erotic and violent atrocities with the moral truths of the faith as envisioned by Erasmus’s Christian humanist thinking, which transpires in the spiritual, social, and ethical values comprised in the text. This essay explores the ways in which Segunda Celestina, in dialog with Erasmus’s ideas, portrays, in a jovial and rather carnivalesque manner, the spiritual progress of a morally imperfect, but inherently virtuous society. In this light, Segunda Celestina can be construed as Silva’s attempt to write a book of entertainment for a popular audience that would also be profitable from a humanist and Christian standpoint.

En 1534 Feliciano de Silva publicó Segunda Celestina, la primera y más influyente de varias continuaciones del éxito editorial de Fernando de Rojas. En esta entretenida ficción, Silva resucita a la alcahueta y reinventa su historia para rectificar las violentas y eróticas atrocidades del original con las verdades de la fe vistas a través del humanismo erasmista, el cual se descubre en los valores espirituales, éticos y sociales que traslucen el texto de Silva. Este trabajo explora las formas en que Segunda Celestina retrata de manera desenfadada y un tanto carnavalesca el progreso espiritual de una sociedad imperfecta moralmente, pero inherentemente buena. En este sentido, Segunda Celestina se puede interpretar como el intento de Silva de escribir un ameno relato para un lector popular que a la vez fuera provechoso desde un punto de vista humanista y cristiano.

Este artículo analiza el romancillo “En estas verdes hojas” de Sor Marcela de San Félix. Se profundiza en el uso que hace la poeta del jardín conventual y sus flores para construir un poema complejo y lleno de matices que este trabajo pormenoriza. También se investiga la construcción del retrato de Cristo a la petrarquista que hace la escritora valiéndose de las plantas del jardín. Este retrato, convencional solo en parte, demuestra la habilidad de Sor Marcela para reconstruir un topos poético particular e interpretarlo con objetivos sagrados. Sor Marcela hace una descriptio viri y muestra a Cristo tanto como amado idealizado (el retrato tradicional) y como el habitual varón de dolores.

This article examines Sor Marcela de San Felix’s ballad “En estas verdes hojas.” I analyze in detail how she makes use of the convent garden and its flowers to construct a complex poem rich in shades of meaning. At the same time, I analyze how she utilizes these plants to compose a Petrarchist portrait of Christ. This portrait, which is conventionally Petrarchan only in part, reveals Sor Marcela’s ability to give a particular poetic topos a sacred reinterpretation. Sor Marcela provides a descriptio viri that depicts Christ as both the ideal lover and the more common Man of Sorrows.
