Résumé
L’exportation est une activité qui peut renforcer la performance des PME, mais elle est aussi une activité risquée sans garantie de succès. Cela peut freiner certaines PME à s’y engager, alors que les risques peuvent être gérés et contrôlés. Que font les PME exportatrices face à ces situations ? Une analyse typologique conduite auprès de 235 PME manufacturières exportatrices québécoises révèle une diversité de comportements expliqués par le contexte de risque et le degré d’engagement à l’exportation. Les PME fortement engagées sur des marchés éloignés sont plus actives en gestion des risques et enregistrent des taux supérieurs de performance globale. La gestion des risques est ainsi une capacité à développer chez les PME pour favoriser le succès de leur développement international.

Abstract
Exporting is an activity that can boost the performance of SMEs, but it is also a risky activity with no guarantee of success. This can discourage some SMEs from getting involved, even though the risks can be managed and controlled. What do exporting SMEs do about these situations? A typological analysis of 235 exporting manufacturing SMEs in Quebec reveals a diversity of behaviours explained by the risk context and the degree of commitment to exporting. SMEs with a strong commitment to distant markets are more active in risk management and record higher rates of overall performance. Risk management is therefore a capability that SMEs need to develop to favor their success on their international development.

La exportación puede impulsar el rendimiento de las PYME, pero también es una actividad arriesgada, sin garantías de éxito. Esto puede disuadir a algunas empresas de emprender este camino, aunque los riesgos sean gestionables. ¿Qué hacen las PYME exportadoras en estas situaciones? Un análisis de 235 PYME manufactureras exportadoras de Quebec revela una variedad de comportamientos explicados por el contexto de riesgo y el grado de compromiso con la exportación. Las empresas con mayor compromiso con mercados lejanos gestionan mejor el riesgo y presentan mejores índices de rendimiento global. La gestión del riesgo es, por tanto, una capacidad clave que las PYME deben desarrollar para tener éxito internacionalmente.
