Cet article s’intéresse à l’évolution de la problématisation et du traitement de l’indifférence religieuse au Québec à l’aune du développement de la sociologie religieuse et de la sécularisation de son objet de recherche. J’avance l’hypothèse selon laquelle le développement de la problématique de l’indifférence aurait connu deux phases : d’une part, une phase interne, durant laquelle l’indifférence était essentiellement traitée comme un « problème » né et perpétué dans et par un catholicisme « de masse » ; d’autre part, une phase externe, venue de pair avec l’émergence d’une nouvelle génération de sociologues ayant favorisé l’introduction de perspectives séculières dans l’étude du religieux. De la sociologie pastorale à l’étude du catholicisme culturel en passant par le développement de la religiologie, les transformations du cadrage sociologique de la question de l’indifférence religieuse et de la figure de l’indifférent constituent l’héritage d’une sociologie de la « non-religion » qui, en contexte québécois, reste encore à faire.
Abstract
This article looks at the evolution of the problematization and reading of religious indifference in Quebec, as a result of the development of religious sociology and the secularization of its research object. I suggest that the development of the matter of religious indifference has gone through two phases: on the one hand, an internal phase, during which indifference was treated as a “problem” formed and perpetuated in and by a ‘‘mass Catholicism’’ ; on the other, an external phase, which came with the emergence of a new generation of sociologists who favoured the introduction of secular approaches within the field of sociology of religion. From pastoral sociology to the study of cultural Catholicism to the development of religiologie, the transformations in the sociological framing of the theme of religious indifference and the figure of the indifferent form the heritage of a sociology of ‘‘nonreligion’’ that has yet to exist in Quebec.
