Abstract
Motivational interviewing in the context of gambling disorder focuses on the current concerns of individuals undergoing treatment. This study examines how the verbatim transcripts of twelve motivational interviews shed light on treatment outcomes—namely success, dropout, or nonresponse. Motivational themes such as commitment, reasons for change, perceived ability, desire, action, and need for change appear across all trajectories. Dropout and nonresponse trajectories display specific themes, including low perceived ability to change, high expectations regarding treatment, and the use of gambling as an emotion‑regulation strategy. These findings highlight the richness of the discourse produced during motivational interviews.
