Résumé
Cet article traite d’un ouvrage intitulé Abenaki Indian Legends, Grammar and Place Names et publié en 1932 par un éditeur de Victoriaville appelé La Voix des Bois-Francs. Son auteur, Henry Lorne Masta (1853-1943), est un Abénakis d’Odanak qui a passé la majeure partie de sa vie comme maître d’école. À une époque où pratiquement aucun auteur autochtone n’a encore été publié, Masta fait office de précurseur, car il est un des premiers auteurs autochtones au Québec, comptant même trois ouvrages à son actif. Afin de bien comprendre l’importance de l’oeuvre de Masta, nous allons, premièrement, nous intéresser aux premiers auteurs et intellectuels autochtones du Québec, mais plus particulièrement aux auteurs abénakis. Nous allons ensuite nous pencher sur la vie de Masta et décrire les circonstances ayant mené à la création de son dernier ouvrage. Finalement, nous allons aborder la réception de l’ouvrage dans la communauté scientifique, de cette époque jusqu’à nos jours.

Abstract
This article focusses on a book entitled Abenaki Indian Legends, Grammar and Place Names published in 1932 by a Victoriaville publishing house called La Voix des Bois-Francs. The book’s author, Henry Lorne Masta (1853-1943), is an Abenaki from Odanak who spent most of his life as a schoolmaster. At a time when practically no Aboriginal authors had ever been published, Masta was a trailblazer, being one of the first Aboriginal authors in Quebec with three books to his credit. To fully understand the importance of Masta's work, we begin by looking at Quebec's early Aboriginal authors and intellectuals, with a particular focus on Abenaki authors. We then look at Masta's life and describe the circumstances that led to the creation of his last work. Finally, we consider how the book has been received in the scientific community up until now.
