Il existe en Pays Basque des artistes de la parole. Ces artistes improvisent des poèmes nouveaux qu’ils chantent sur les mélodies de chansons anciennes. Ce sont des bertsulari, littéralement: des « faiseurs de vers ». Cette pratique est attestée de longue date dans l’ensemble du Pays Basque. Il ne s’agit pas pour autant d’une pratique propre à la culture basque. On en rencontre de nombreuses formes dans des contextes culturels bien différents (les ponts-neufs et les mazarinades du XVII^e siècle parisien, les chansons de Béranger au XIX^e, les chjame e resportdi corses, les golgs catalans, les desafios portugais ou les trovos andalous...). Nous récuserons donc ce mythe encombrant que nous lègue le XIX^e des folkloristes: celui d’une insularité du peuple basque, le plus ancien du continent européen, et de ses pratiques culturels.

En fait, si la technique d’improvisation n’est pas originale, ce qui frappe en Pays Basque, c’est la très forte mobilisation sociale qui accompagne ces Jeux d’improvisation orale. Loin d’être aujourd’hui un genre traditionnel en voie de disparition, l’art du bertsulari fonctionne comme un emblème vivant d’une identité collective basque qui veux exister comme telle. Cet article consiste en une approche ethnographique de la ritualisation de la mise en spcetacle de cette parole à l’occasion d’une finale du championnat général des bertsulari du Pays Basque, le 17 décembre 1989, dans le vélodrome d’Anoeta, à Saint-Sébastien, devant 12 000 spectateurs. Une manière d’entrevoir comment aller écouter chanter des improvisateurs participe de la fabrication d’une identité culturelle fortement revendiquée.

In the Basque Country artists of the spoken word are found. They improvise new poems, which they sing to melodies from songs of olden times. They are the Bertsulari, literally: “singers of verse.” This practice is attested long ago throughout the Basque country, yet it is not one that is specific to Basque culture. Many forms of it are encountered in quite different cultural contexts (the ponts-neufs and mazarinades of 17th-century Paris, the songs of Béranger in the 19th century, the chjame e respondi of Corsica, the golgs of Catalonia, the desafios of Portugal or the trovos of Andalusia ...). This article challenges the cumbersome myth left to us by 19th-century folklorists: the myth of the insularity of the Basque people, the oldest people on the European continent, and of its cultural practices.

In fact, though the technique of improvisation is not original, what is striking in the Basque country is the very strong social mobilization accompanying these games of oral improvisation. Far from being today a disappearing traditional genre, the bertsulari art form functions as a living emblem of a Basque collective identity wishing to exist as such. This article consists of an ethnographic approach to performance ritualization of this poetry on the occasion of a final of the Basque country’s general bertsulari championship on December 17, 1989, at the Anoeta velodrome in San Sebastian, before 12,000 spectators. This is a glance at how the process of going from listening to singing, by the improvisers, flows from the construction of a strongly-held cultural identity.

Ce texte tente de montrer comment l’image du gaucho, ce cowboy de la Pampa argentine, est devenue un mythe identitaire national et comment, par la suite, cette image se constitue en objet de la littérature juive-argentine. L’auteur examine pour ce faire l’oeuvre fondatrice de la littérature juive-argentine: Los gauchos judios, d’Alberto Gerchunoff. Le gaucho, figure controversée du folklore argentin, devient le symbole de l’identité nationale après avoir été marginalisée pendant des décennies et finit par être, paradoxalement, une clé d’intégration imaginaire des immigrants juifs à la société argentine.

This text attempts to show how the image of the gaucho, this cowboy of Argentina’s pampas, became a myth of national identity and how this image later arose as a subject of Jewish-Argentine literature. The author does this by examining the founding work of Jewish-Argentine literature: Los gauchos judios, by Alberto Gerchunoff. The gaucho, a controversial figure in Argentine folklore, came to symbolize national identity after having been marginalized for decades. Paradoxically, he ended up as an imaginary key to the intégration of Jewish immigrants into Argentine society.

Le cadre bâti est un objet culturel dont la signification varie dans le temps. En effet, l’étude du processus de préservation historique dévoile un phénomène social de réappropriation et de reconstruction du sens à donner aux éléments de l’environnement construit par l’attribution d’une fonction symbolique. C’est pourquoi il est essentiel de comprendre comment la collectivité transforme l’objet en porteur de symbole. Comme le message du cadre bâti est implicite, ce processus nécessite la constitution d’une interprétation commune. Ainsi, la restitution de l’artéfact dans son contexte de signification nécessite un examen de son insertion dans l’univers symbolique collectif à la fois dans le temps et socialement. À partir d’un modèle d’étude du changement culturel, nous examinerons le cas du Vieux-Québec. Entre 1945 et 1963, la société québécoise commence par reconnaître des bâtiments, puis un ensemble urbain, comme symbole du passé de la nation. Par ailleurs, la collectivité entretient une relation dialogique avec son environnement construit qu’elle remodèle au fur et à mesure de sa symbolisation. Il s’agit donc de comprendre comment un artéfact devient signifiant socialement et comment il est réinterprété et réaménagé dans un système de représentation qui se modifie à travers le temps.

The built environment is a cultural object whose significance varies over time. By studying the process of historical preservation, a social phenomenon is unveiled whereby reappropriation and reconstruction occur in the meaning to be given to environmental components constructed through assignment of a symbolic function. It is thus essential to understand how the community transforms the object into a symbol carrier. Since the message of the built environment is implicit, this process entails creation of a common interpretation. To put the artifact back into its context of meaning, one must examine how it fits into the community’s symbolic universe, the way people read it spreading out over time through social processes. Using a study model of cultural change, we will examine the case of Old Quebec City. Between 1945 and 1963, Quebec society first recognized buildings, then an entire urban area, as a symbol of the nation’s past. The community maintains a dialogic relationship with its constructed environment, which it rearranges as symbolization progresses. The point, then, is to understand how, socially, an artifact becomes a signifier and how it is reinterpreted and reworked within a System of representation that changes over time.

Le touriste d’aujourd’hui, qui fréquente les hauts lieux du patrimoine, est l’héritier d’un courant de tourisme de distinction issu d’une classe restreinte de privilégiés du XIX^e siècle. En Amérique, comme en Europe, dès les années 1830, une classe de nantis voyageait au Canada. Québec, dès le XVIII^e siècle, était une ville de grande réputation, et « même un symbole », à cause de sa situation et de son site exceptionnels. Dans le cadre de l’analyse du paysage urbain du Vieux-Québec, nous avons trouvé pertinent d’analyser les discours des guides touristiques vantant les charmes de la ville pour répondre à nos interrogations: il s’agit de se demander ce que les touristes venaient voir à Québec dans les années 1830-1860. Le paysage urbain du Vieux-Québec d'alors était sans doute très différent de celui que découvre le touriste d’aujourd’hui ou celui de 1930. La méthode choisie, dans un premier temps, est de rechercher, dans les guides touristiques du XIX^e et du début XX^e siècle, la confirmation de l’existence ancienne d’un tourisme de consommation des paysages à Québec et, dans un deuxième temps, les étapes de la genèse du paysage; voir comment on peut suivre, en élaborant une typologie des différents guides, les stades de la construction des nouvelles formes urbaines. Notre propos s’articule selon deux axes: le premier étant l’étude des discours des visiteurs et des rédacteurs de guide de 1830 à 1930; le second reposant sur la géographie des lieux visités, tant du point de vue des paysages que des circuits. L’ensemble de la recherche s’appuie sur une revue détaillée des guides historiques et touristiques retrouvés ainsi que sur quelques relations de voyage.

The tourist of today who visits the leading heritage sites is heir to a 19th-century current of gentry tourism derived from a small class of privileged people. In America, as in Europe, a well-to-do class was travelling to Canada as of the 1830s. Quebec City was as early as the 18th century a much reputed town and “even a symbol”, because of its exceptional site and situation. As part of an analysis of the urban landscape of Old Quebec City, the author found it relevant to conduct discourse analysis on tourist guidebooks extolling the city's charms. She wished to know what it was the tourists came to see in Quebec City in the years 1830-1860. The urban landscape of Old Quebec City back then was likely very different from the one the tourist of today or 1930 would discover. The method chosen consisted of looking through 19th-and early 20th-century guidebook first for confirmation of the existence in the past of a tourism of landscape consumption in Quebec City and, secondly, for the steps in the landscape’s evolution; to see how the stages in the construction of new urban forms can be followed on the basis of a typology drawn from the different guidebooks. This article is organized around two axes: the first one, an analysis of visitors’ and guidebook writers’ discourse from 1830 to 1930; the second, a study of tour-site geography from the perspective of landscapes and tour routes. Ail of the research relies on a detailed review of available historical and tourist guidebooks, and also on travel accounts.

Dans cet article, nous présentons les concepts de base d’une méthode originale d’analyse relationnelle, que nous appliquons en ce moment à notre recherche de doctorat sur un problème historique complexe, soit l’adaptation interculturelle de Radisson. Cet explorateur et coureur de bois d’origine française du XVII^e siècle connut en effet une carrière fructueuse au milieu des cultures française, amérindienne et anglaise, qu’il fréquenta en alternance entre 1650 et 1710. Notre objectif est de comprendre comment Radisson s’est adapté à chacune d’elles et pourquoi il y a réussi. Cette approche originale de la biographie s’inspire des développements théoriques récents en biologie de l’émergence et en physique du chaos. Nous avons choisi de présenter ici sommairement ces concepts, à l’aide d’exemples simples, et de nous concentrer sur l’application de notre méthode à quelques moments forts de la vie de Radisson: sa capture par les Iroquois, son départ de Nouvelle-France, son départ d’Angleterre et les années de travail en France, puis son retour définitif en Angleterre.

This article presents us with the basic concepts for an original method of relational analysis, which the author is now applying to his doctoral research on a complex historical problem, i.e. Radisson’s intercultural adaptation. This 17th-century French born explorer and coureur de bois had a fruitful career amid French, Amerindian, and English cultures, which he alternately frequented between 1650 and 1710. The objective here is to understand how Radisson adapted to each of these cultures and why he succeeded. This original biographical approach is inspired by recent theoretical developments in the biology of emergence and the physics of chaos. These concepts are presented here summarily with simple examples, the focus being on applying the method to a few key moments in Radisson’s life: his capture by the Iroquois, his departure from New France, his departure from England and the years spent working in France, and his final return to England.

Sorte d’appendice à la Description de la Louisiane (1683), Les Mœurs des Sauvages appartiennent au genre de la relation de voyage. À la fois traité, journal, chronique, mémoire, commentaire, le genre hybride de la relation de voyage a longtemps été ignoré par la discipline littéraire, et même encore aujourd’hui, désavoué par certains au nom du principe — mal défini — de la littérarité. En outre, Les Mœurs des Sauvages se donnent à lire comme un traité sur les « Sauvages ». Préoccupé par son autohéroïsation, le récollet regarde l’autre en fonction des pactes d’exploration et de conversion qu’il devait accomplir. Sa perception de l’autre résulte d’une distorsion de la réalité orientée vers la construction d’une figure du missionnaire idéal, ou, à tout le moins, idéalisé. Ce biais n’empêche pas la présence d’une valeur ethnologique. Pour bien étudier les deux aspects de l’œuvre — littéraire et ethnologique —, l’auteure a recours aux approches littéraires et à une forme d’interdisciplinarité. Elle fait part, dans une première partie, de ses hésitations méthodologiques et, dans une seconde partie, s’attarde à montrer la méthode en action par l’étude de la perception de Hennepin et de la référence aux Amérindiens. Autrement dit, à partir d’un extrait choisi des Mœurs des Sauvages, une analyse littéraire et Intertextuelle montre comment, dans le texte, s’articule la figure de l’Indien avec la figure du missionnaire et comment, à l’aide des disciplines de l’histoire et de l’ethnologie, on peut passer de ce qu’il convient d’appeler la figure de l’Indien à la construction identitaire de l’Indien du XVIIe siècle en Amérique du Nord.

A sort of appendix to the Description de la Louisiane (1683), Les Moeurs des Sauvages belongs to the travel account genre. At one and the same time treatise, diaiy, chronicle, report, and commentary, the hybrid travel-account genre has long been ignored by literary studies and is still, even today, repudiated by some on the principle — ill-defined — of literariness. Les Moeurs des Sauvages reads very much like a treatise on “Savages”. Concerned with his own self-glorification, the Recollet author looks at the Other on the basis of agreements for carrying out exploration and conversion. His perception of the Other results from a distortion of reality oriented to constructing an ideal or, at the very least, idealized missionary figure. Such a bias does not leave the book devoid of ethnological value. Its two aspects — literary and ethnological — are here studied in depth through literary approaches and a form of interdisciplinarity. The author of this article first states her hesitations about the methodology and then takes the time to show the method in action by studylng Hennepin’s perception and the references to Amerindians. In other words, using a chosen excerpt from Les Moeurs des Sauvages, a literary intertextual analysis shows how, in the text, the figure of the Indian and that of the missionary interrelate. It also shows, with help from the disciplines of history and ethnology, how one can go from what may be called the figure of the Indian to constructing the identity of the 17th-centuiy North American Indian.

Une rencontre étonnante eut lieu au Nouveau Monde lors de la période des premiers contacts: celle de l’Anthropophage américain et de l’Européen. Ce dernier devait faire face à un Autre si souvent fantasmé, dont la réalité paraissait d’autant plus fantastique qu’elle correspondait à une représentation extrêmement redoutée de ce qui se pouvait trouver comme humanité dans les terres nouvelles. Découvrant le tabou de l’anthropophagie transgressé de façon coutumière, le voyageur fut d’abord incapable d’y reconnaître une transgression rituelle permettant de comprendre, sinon d’accepter, un Autre dont il mit d’abord de l’avant la différence. Cette différence fut traduite en termes de supériorité ou d’infériorité selon les deux visions préexistentes dans l’imaginaire européen d’avant la conquête: celles du bon et du mauvais Sauvages. Cent cinquante ans de relations de voyages illustrant ce rapport à l’Autre, ainsi que l’essai Des Cannibales de Michel de Montaigne, nous aideront à comprendre en quoi l’image de l’anthropophage oscillait entre ces deux pôles représentatifs. En fait, l’étrangeté radicale du Cannibale ne fut jamais vraiment comprise ou appréhendée. C’est la barbarie du Cannibale, prétexte à son anéantissement, qui fut surtout mise de l’avant par les chroniqueurs, tandis que Montaigne et Léry, à qui l’on a souvent attribué un certain relativisme culturel, l’ont utilisée aux fins d’une démonstration, l’un dans le cadre de son projet d’autoportrait, l’autre aux fins d’une critique de sa société. Ainsi, l’Autre, devenant miroir pour l’Européen, fut surtout celui par lequel fut filtré puis expliqué le Soi.

A remarkable encounter took place in the New World during the contact period, one between American cannibals and Europeans. The latter were to confront an oft-told and fantasized Other, whose reality appeared ail the more fantastical since it matched a much dreaded image of the humans who might be found in the new lands. On discovering the cannibalism taboo being transgressed customarily, explorers were unable to recognize this as a ritual transgression and thus could neither understand nor accept an Other whose difference they emphasized. This difference was expressed in terms of superiority or inferiority, according to two pre-existing views in the European imagination predating the conquest: the Noble Savage and the Wicked Savage. Travel accounts illustrating this relationship to the Other over a 150-year period, and the essay Des Cannibales by Michel de Montaigne, will help us to understand how the image of cannibalism swung back and forth between these two poles of representation. In fact, the cannibal’s radical strangeness was never really understood or grasped. Chroniclers above ail stressed the cannibal’s barbarism, an excuse for his annihilation. Montaigne and Léry, however, to whom has often been attributed a certain form of cultural relativism, used him for purposes of demonstration. The former used him as part of his project of selfportrayal, the latter for a critique of his society. For Europeans, the Other became a mirror. He was thus the one through whom the Self was filtered and then explained.

L’interdisciplinarité a été, par le passé, un facteur positif dans le développement des sciences sociales. Elle leur a permis de survivre à certaines crises épistémologiques. La question se pose maintenant de savoir si l'interdisciplinarité peut également permettre aux sciences sociales de survivre à la crise qu’institue la critique radicale du savoir comme travail du langage sur lui-même, i.e. au « linguistic turn ». La réponse qu’apporte cet article, si elle est directement liée à ce qu’est, essentiellement, l’interdisciplinarité, soit une expérience de l’altérité, tend également à modérer les intérêts d’ordres méthodologique et disciplinaire au profit d’une participation plus active et réfléchie aux « formes de l’expérience ».

In the development of the social sciences, interdisciplinarity has played an important role. It has often helped the social sciences to survive epistemological crises. The question now is to know if interdisciplinarity can also help the social sciences overcome the crises brought about by the radical critique of knowledge as the work of language on itself, i.e. the “linguistic turn”. The claim made by this article, while directly related to what is, in essence, interdisciplinarity — i.e., an experience of otherness —, also tends to moderate methodological and disciplinary interests in favour of more active and throughtful participation in “forms of experience”.

L’article présente les bases d’une recherche exploratoire visant à étudier comment se définit l’altérité dans les situations de contact interculturel. L’atteinte de cet objet a été possible par l’analyse des relations entre individus aux identités culturelles différentes, au Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean. Précisément, nous avons interviewé les membres de couples mixtes dans le but de cerner les éléments qui composent le sentiment d’altérité, de comprendre comment celui-ci se vit et comment il se négocie. Nous posons l’hypothèse que la situation de conjugalité mixte, où la rencontre des identités sociales est première, fait apparaître la négociation effectuée entre ce qui sépare et unit dans la formation de l’identité du couple. Par ailleurs, l’usage social de la famille pose deux questions majeures. D’abord intervient la question de l’alliance entre différentes lignes généalogiques, soit la relation avec la belle-famille et l’entourage. Vient aussi la question de la filiation entre générations, c’est-à-dire les conditions de la transmission culturelle des parents à leurs enfants. L’articulation de la sphère privée et de la sphère publique dans un couple mixte soulève des éléments au coeur même des enjeux reliés à l’interculturel. De ce fait, la gestion des identités et du rapport à l’« Autre » est une préoccupation centrale dans l’intégration des immigrants.

The article presents the fundamentals of an exploratory investigation into how otherness is defined in situations of intercultural contact. This was made possible by analyzing relationships between individuals with different cultural identifies in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region. Specifïcally, members of mixed couples were interviewed in order to mark out the components of the feeling of otherness and to understand how this feeling is experienced and negotiated. The hypothesis advanced here is that the situation of a mixed marriage, where the meeting of social identifies is primary, reveals the negotiation between whatever separates and unites the couple in the formation of their identity. The social practice of family life also raises two major issues. First, there is the matter of an alliance between different lineages, i.e. relations with in-laws and the people around them. There is also the matter of intergenerational relationships of parentage, i.e. conditions of cultural transmission from parents to their children. The linkage of the private and public spheres in a mixed couple points to factors at the very heart of intercultural issues. Consequently, management of identities and of the relationship to the “Other” is a central concern in integrating immigrants.
