La boussole de la transition. S’orienter dans le discours sur la transition écologique de la région métropolitaine de Montréal The transition compass. Navigating the sustainability transition discourse in the Montreal metropolitan region

Résumé

On observe aujourd’hui l’essor d’un discours sur la transition écologique dont il convient de distinguer les usages selon leurs processus, finalités et échelles socioterritoriales. Dans le cadre d’une recherche-action avec les acteurs de la transition dans la région métropolitaine de Montréal, nous avons élaboré un schéma d’analyse qui permet de déchiffrer ce discours : la boussole de la transition. La recherche a permis de répondre à trois questions : 1) Comment décrire le discours sur la transition? 2) Comment coconstruire une vision commune de la transition? 3) Quels sont les facteurs qui déterminent la configuration du discours sur la transition? Pour ce faire, nous avons analysé quatre documents représentatifs du discours sur la transition au Québec, puis animé trois ateliers participatifs avec des acteurs montréalais de la transition. Cet article permet d’actualiser l’analyse du discours sur la transition et avance deux facteurs explicatifs, à savoir l’échelle socioterritoriale et l’homogénéité des acteurs.

Abstract

The rising discourse of sustainability transition comes with the necessity of distinguishing its uses according to their processes, purposes and socio-territorial scales. In the context of an action-research project with transition actors in the Montreal metropolitan region, we have developed a figure that allows us to decipher this discourse: the transition compass. The research allowed us to answer three questions: 1) How to describe the discourse of transition? 2) How to co-construct a common vision of transition? 3) What are the factors that determine the configuration of the transition discourse? To do this, we analyzed four documents that are representative of the Transition discourse in Quebec, and then conducted three participatory workshops with Montreal Transition actors. This article updates the analysis of the Transition discourse and suggests two explanatory factors, namely the socio-territorial scale and actor homogeneity.
