Abstract
The story of well-known patrician and merchant Felice Brancacci after his exile from Florence in 1435 has hitherto gone untold. This article offers the first scholarly analysis of newly uncovered letters, account books, and a will composed by Felice after his banishment. These documents convey Felice’s lived experience of exile, highlighting how he navigated his social, political, and commercial roles in central Italy by networking with merchants and elites as well as his sense of isolation and devastating loss. The study contributes to our understanding of the experiences of a remarkable number of political exiles from Florence, and from Italian city states more broadly, during the Renaissance.

Résumé
L’histoire du célèbre patricien et marchand Felice Brancacci après son exil de Florence en 1435 est demeurée jusqu’à présent inédite. Cet article offre la première analyse de lettres, de livres de comptes et d’un testament rédigés par Brancacci après son expulsion. Ces documents, récemment découverts, témoignent de son expérience vécue de l’exil ; ils illustrent comment il a su adroitement conduire ses activités sociales, politiques et commerciales dans le centre de l’Italie en établissant des réseaux avec les marchands et les élites, mais aussi le sentiment d’isolement et de perte dévastatrice qui l’habitait. Cette étude permet une meilleure compréhension de l’expérience vécue par un nombre remarquable d’exilés politiques de Florence et, plus généralement, des cités-États italiennes, à la Renaissance.
