Résumé
L’atermoiement est un délai accordé par des créanciers à un débiteur insolvable. Illustrant l’intérêt de cette source pour l’histoire, deux atermoiements notariés de 1803 permettent de dévoiler l’importance des entreprises d’un meunier du Bas-Canada, Joseph Barbeau, au tournant du 19e siècle. On peut, à partir des informations qu’ils contiennent, retracer les activités économiques de cet artisan-entrepreneur dans la construction, la réparation et l’exploitation des moulins à farine, ainsi que son insertion dans le commerce des grains.
Abstract
An “Atermoiement” or assignment was an additional period granted by creditors to an insolvent debtor. Illustrating the historical value of this source, two notarized assignments from 1803 reveal the importance of the business activities of a Lower Canadian miller, Joseph Barbeau, at the beginning of the 19th century. Based on the information they contain, we can trace the economic activities of this artisan-entrepreneur in the construction, repair and operation of flour mills, as well as his involvement in the grain trade.
