The Entanglements of English in Contemporary Greenland Les enchevêtrements de l’anglais au Groenland contemporain

Abstract

Greenland’s international presence intertwines with its emerging status as an autonomous Arctic nation and with reconfigurations of the postcolonial identities of its people. In this article, I explore the positions and practices of English in Greenland in relation to two conditions of ambivalence: the ambivalence of English as both imperialistic and empowering, and the ambivalence that textures postcolonial Kalaallit-Danish relations. I consider how exploring the arguments, desires, and contestations of English, gathered through diverse empirical fragments, draws attention to the entanglements of multidirectional aspirations, diverse communities, new technologies, and altered geographies. The connections to English emerge in the everyday communicative practices of Greenland’s people and in the demands of organizations and industries. These connections are just as formidable as those stemming from political rhetoric and policies. I propose that the significance of English is in the making and conclude by outlining three areas of further collaborative research to follow this development for Kalaallisut, for Kalaallit-Danish relations, and for the production of new forms of equalities and inequalities.

Résumé

La présence internationale du Groenland est étroitement liée à son statut émergent de nation arctique autonome et à la reconfiguration des identités postcoloniales de son peuple. Dans cet article, j’explore les positions et les pratiques de l’anglais au Groenland et leurs relations avec deux conditions d’ambivalence : L’ambivalence de l’anglais, à la fois impérialiste et habilitant, et l’ambivalence qui structure les relations postcoloniales entre les Kalaallit et les Danois. J’examine comment l’exploration des arguments, des désirs et des contestations de l’anglais, recueillis à travers divers fragments empiriques, exige de prêter attention aux enchevêtrements d’aspirations multidirectionnelles, de communautés diverses, de nouvelles technologies et de géographies modifiées. Les liens avec l’anglais apparaissent dans les pratiques quotidiennes de communication des habitants du Groenland et dans les demandes des organisations et des industries. Ces liens sont tout aussi formidables que ceux qui découlent de la rhétorique et des politiques. Je propose que l’importance de l’anglais soit en cours d’élaboration et je conclus en soulignant trois domaines de recherche collaborative pour suivre ce développement pour les Kalaallisut, pour les relations entre les Kalaallit et les Danois et pour produire de nouvelles formes d’égalité et d’inégalité.
