L’engagement féministe de Suzanne Comhaire-Sylvain (1898-1975)

Résumé

Cette étude porte sur l’engagement féministe de Suzanne Comhaire-Sylvain, première anthropologue haïtienne reconnue. Ayant travaillé dans le champ de l’anthropologie et de la linguistique, cette figure avant-gardiste de la longue et riche histoire du féminisme haïtien a porté une attention soutenue aux réalités des femmes noires, dont celles de son pays. Son engagement intellectuel a été profondément influencé par une communauté épistémique constituée de femmes marquées par des situations diverses. Cet article souligne l’apport théorique de cette chercheure dans la structuration du féministe haïtien et du féministe noir en général ; il retrace un demi-siècle de sa contribution à la compréhension des rapports de pouvoir, dont ceux de sexe en Haïti et à l’étranger.

Abstract

This article discusses the feminist commitment of Suzanne Comhaire-Sylvain, the first recognized Haitian anthropologist. Having worked in the field of anthropology and linguistics, this avant-garde figure in the long and rich history of Haitian feminists has paid close attention to the realities of black women, including those of her country. Her intellectual commitment was deeply influenced by an epistemic community made up of women marked by diverse situations. This article points out the theoretical input of this researcher to the structuration of the Haitian feminism and the black feminism in general. It traces back half a century of her contribution to the understanding of power relations, including those of sex in Haiti and abroad.
