Abstract
University studies are challenging, especially in terms of mental health. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated this tendency, leading to a noticeable increase in anxiety and depressive symptoms, especially among certain minority or marginalized subgroups. The objective of this quantitative study, conducted in Quebec among 4,666 university students, was to identify mental health determinants in a pandemic context. Regression analyses identified risk factors and protective factors related to psychological distress, in addition to anxiety, depressive and post-traumatic stress disorders. The analyses highlight how stress around the pandemic had a negative impact on student mental health. However, social support and spirituality seemed to have had protective effects. Some factors characteristic of student diversity caused slight fluctuations in mental health status. More studies are needed to better understand relationships between the risk factors and protective factors identified in this study.
