Abstract
The social hierarchy of Elizabethan England was stoutly and exactly "hinged". At every point ranks touched in the hierarchy, cultural instruments worked to establish a connection between them. The purpose of the present paper is to give an anthropological account of two of these cultural instruments, showing how they served the concept and the practice of Elizabethan social organization. The cultural instruments in question are courtesy and child exchange.

La hiérarchie sociale du temps de l'Angleterre élizabétaine était très fermement établie. Lorsque les rangs se rejoignaient dans la hiérarchie à quelque niveau que ce soit, des instruments culturels travaillaient à créer des liens entre eux. Le présent article se propose d'examiner deux de ces instruments culturels d'un point de vue anthropologique, tout en démontrant leur contribution à l'organisation sociale élizabétaine. Les instruments culturels dont il sera question sont la courtoisie et l'échange d'enfants.
