“Through their own efforts”: Nutrition Studies and Interventions in Early 20th-Century Northern Newfoundland and Southern Labrador

Abstract

A small but significant spate of health and nutrition studies was completed in Northern Newfoundland and Southern Labrador in the first third of the 20th century. Published in peer-reviewed journals, such as the Journal of the American Medical Association and the Irish Journal of Medical Sciences, the research was sponsored by the International Grenfell Association (IGA), led by zealous Christian missionary and physician Wilfred Grenfell. The paper contributes to Canadian food studies by providing insights into the challenging social and economic conditions faced by the people of the region and the persistence of European food ways, despite the vastly different geophysical setting. It demonstrates that the studies had widespread impacts as they advanced the understanding of deficiency diseases. Yet the interventions had limited local benefits and were not generally successful over time. In keeping with contemporary approaches, the IGA’s nutrition research restricted community development by maintaining and institutionalizing patron-client relationships. This methodology likely led to missed opportunities in terms of community health and development.

Résumé

Au début du 20e siècle, un corpus de textes recensant des études en santé et en nutrition en provenance du nord de Terre-Neuve et de la partie sud du Labrador a été compilé. Malgré sa petite taille, ce corpus a néanmoins une signification historique importante. Les études répertoriées ont été diffusées dans les périodiques scientifiques de renom de l’époque (entre autres le Journal of the American Medical Association et le Irish Journal of Medical Sciences) et ont été subventionnées par l’organisme International Grenfell Association (IGA), dont Wilfred Grenfell, missionnaire chrétien zélé et médecin, était le directeur. Cet article contribue aux études alimentaires au Canada en offrant un compte rendu détaillé des contextes social et économique de la région à l’époque. En somme, malgré les différences géophysiques importantes, les pratiques alimentaires et nutritionnelles en provenance de l’Europe ont persisté dans la région aux dépens des pratiques régionales locales. Cet article examine aussi les impacts des études en lien avec les maladies par carence. Même si ces études ont permis de mieux comprendre les maladies par carence, les bienfaits des interventions étaient limités et, au cours des années, ont connu peu de succès. Semblable à la recherche contemporaine chez d’autres organismes, la recherche menée par la IGA a restreint les interventions en provenance de la collectivité en favorisant plutôt des partenariats patron-client. Cette approche a sans doute ralenti et nuit à l’évolution de la santé communautaire dans la région.
