CERCLE KINISTÒTÀDIMIN : DÉCOLONISATION DE L’ÉCOLE DE SERVICE SOCIAL DE L’UNIVERSITÉ D’OTTAWA

Résumé

L’article s’appuie sur des réflexions entourant le Cercle Kinistòtàdimin amorcé en 2018 à l’École de service social (ÉSS) de l’Université d’Ottawa (UO), située sur le territoire traditionnel et non cédé de la Nation Omàmiwinini Algonquine. Il présente les démarches de décolonisation engagée. À cette fin, l’article examine d’abord le contexte de l’initiative au moyen de définitions des concepts centraux et d’un état des lieux relatif aux apprenant.es autochtones; d’un examen des significations concrètes du néologisme d’autochtonisation dans les milieux universitaires (Gaudry et Lorenz, 2018); et de la mise en évidence des perspectives décolonisatrices associées à la profession et aux études en travail social. Prenant appui sur cette mise en contexte, ainsi que sur deux cas de figure d’universités ontariennes offrant des formations « décolonisées » en travail social, les auteur.es analysent les étapes opératoires de l’initiative de décolonisation Kinistòtàdimin et en relèvent les principaux enjeux. L’article conclut sur une discussion critique de la démarche en cours.

Abstract

The article draws on reflections from the Kinistòtàdimin Circle, initiated in 2018 at the University of Ottawa’s School of Social Work, located on the traditional and unceded territory of the Omàmiwinini Algonquin Nation. It outlines the decolonization process that has been undertaken. To this end, the paper first examines the context of the initiative through definitions of central concepts and a review of literature on Indigenous learners; an examination of the concrete meanings of the neologism of Indigenization in academic settings (Gaudry & Lorenz, 2018); and the identification of decolonizing perspectives associated with the social work profession and discipline. Based on this contextualization, as well as on two case studies of Ontario universities offering “decolonized” social work education, the authors analyze the operational steps of the Kinistòtàdimin decolonization initiative and identify its main issues. The article concludes with a critical discussion of the ongoing process.
