How can we evaluate—and refine—a sound installation located in a public space using a scientific approach while doing justice to its artistic dimension? This article offers a review of a research-creation collaboration centered on Niches Acoustiques, a sound installation designed for the forecourt of the Paris Court of Justice, situated on the acoustic edge of the ring road. Beginning with a shared hypothesis—that a site-specific sound installation can transform the perception of an urban environment and make it more livable—the project integrates sound composition, acoustic measurements, immersive simulation, and perceptual evaluation. Two experiments conducted in a listening room explore compositional materials, usage scenarios, and environmental responsiveness behaviors, combining quantitative and qualitative methods. The article demonstrates how these approaches bring experimentation closer to the complexity of the field and shows how the results inform both the evaluation of the composition and the refinement of the methodological framework. Finally, it approaches research-creation as a space for fruitful dialogue, where artistic and scientific practices interact without merging, paving the way for situated, operational, and transferable knowledge.
