Résumé
Il est maintenant reconnu que plusieurs facteurs influencent grandement les efforts de théorisation en anthropologie. Il nous est apparu que le terrain est une pièce centrale de ce casse-tête. C’est ce que nous démontrons dans cet article à l’aide d’une analyse des thèses développées par cinq auteurs de réputation internationale, Arjun Appadurai, Jonathan Friedman, Ulf Hannerz, Michael Herzfeld et Éric Schwimmer. Nous faisons valoir que ces anthropologues ont des notions d’« identité » et de « mondialisation », des conceptions différentes et parfois opposées; conceptions qui, pour l’essentiel, renvoient à leur objet de recherche et à leur façon de l’analyser. Telle est la conclusion à laquelle nous sommes arrivée à la suite d’une comparaison systématique des idées présentées par ces auteurs depuis 1989, l’année 1989 étant reconnue comme une période charnière sur la scène mondiale. Aussi importe-t-il, pour bien comprendre les propos des anthropologues sur ces thèmes comme sur d’autres, de bien décoder au préalable la façon dont ils construisent la réalité.

Abstract
It is now well known that many factors greatly influence efforts in anthropological theorisation. It has become apparent to us that fieldwork is a master piece in this puzzle. This is what we demonstrate in this article in analysing the thesis developed by five internationally well-known authors : Arjun Appadurai, Jonathan Friedman, Ulf Hannerz, Michael Herzfeld and Éric Schwimmer. We argue that these anthropologists have different, and sometimes opposed, conceptions of the notions of ‘‘identity’’ and ‘‘globalization’’, two relatively recent concepts in anthropology. Essentially, those conceptions are closely related to their object of study and to the way they analyse it. This is our conclusion after having systematically compared the ideas put forward by those authors since 1989, the year 1989 being known as a turning-point on the global scene. In order to understand well what they are saying about identity, globalization and other themes, we should first decode the way they are constructing the reality.
