Résumé
La revue de la littérature suggère que la relation entre démocratie et croissance est ambigüe. D’une part les études théoriques sont divisées sur l’impact de la nature du régime politique sur la croissance. D’autre part, les travaux empiriques sur la question aboutissent à des résultats qui restent souvent perplexes sur l’existence d’une corrélation entre les deux concepts. L’objectif de ce travail est d’examiner la nature de cette relation sur un échantillon de 79 pays sur la période 1984-2008 et de vérifier si elle dépend de la stabilité politique. Ce travail débouche sur les principaux résultats suivants : (i) la stabilité politique est une variable clé déterminant de la croissance, (ii) l’effet de la démocratie sur la croissance est statistiquement insignifiant en l’absence d’un cadre politique stable, (iii) finalement, la démocratie menée dans un environnement politiquement stable est d’effet significativement positif sur la croissance.
Abstract
The review of the literature suggests that the relationship between democracy and growth is ambiguous. First theoretical studies are divided on the impact of the nature of political regime on growth. Moreover, empirical studies on the issue lead to results that are often confused about the existence of a correlation between the two concepts. The attempt of this study is to test this relationship for a sample of 79 countries over the period 1984-2008 and to integrate the notion of political stability as a companion variable for democracy. This work leads to the following main results : (i) political stability is a key determinant of growth, (ii) the effect of democracy on growth is statistically insignificant in the absence of a stable political framework, (iii) finally, democracy conducted in a politically stable environment has a significantly positive effect on growth.
