Avons-nous vraiment perdu la langue à l’étranger? Did We Really Lose The Language in Foreign Countries?

Résumé

Le titre réfère, bien sûr, aux vers de Hölderlin, dans la seconde version du poème « Mnemosyne », telle qu'elle a été reconstituée en son temps par Rudolf Beissner. L'essai s'articule autour de trois approches : 1) la mise en évidence (et en question) du rôle dévolu à Hölderlin, comme le représentant par excellence du « traduire moderne », dans L'Épreuve de l'étranger d'Antoine Berman; 2) une tentative de répéter et d'évaluer l'interprétation heideggérienne des vers de Hölderlin, dont l'examen oblige à une relecture partielle et rapide du cours de 1942, Hölderlins Hymne des «Ister»; 3) un développement autour de la perte catastrophique de la langue à l'étranger, comprise à partir de l'expérience d'une langue qui ne traduit plus. L'essai culmine dans une interprétation du « presque » dans les vers cités de Hölderlin, qu'il faut traduire abusivement par un futur antérieur. Nous aurons perdu la langue. L'advenue (de la Catastrophe) ne se fait qu'à partir du futur. C'est le virement du temps chez Hölderlin. D'où aussi l'impératif du traduire à l'étranger pour qu'advienne ce qui n'a pas encore eu lieu. Le traduire moderne ne se comprend ainsi qu'à partir de la question hölderlinienne : comment traduire à l'étranger, dans la langue déjà presque perdue?

Abstract

The title refers to the well known verses by Hölderlin, from the second version of "Mnemosyne" as reconstituted by Rudolf Beissner. The essay is articulated around three motives: 1) The attempt to show and to question the role devoluted by Antoine Berman to Hölderlin as the representative of the modern way and significance of translating; 2) the attempt to repeat and assess the interpretation of the quoted verses by Heidegger, in particular through a swift reading of the 1942 course, Hölderlins Hymne des "Ister"; 3) a development concerning the catastrophic loss of language in "foreign countries", understood here from the point of view of the familiar and historic(al) experience of a language which can no longer translate. The essay culminates in an interpretation of the word "nearly" in the quoted verses by Hölderlin, that has to be "abusively" translated with a past future : we will have lost the language. The advent of the Catastrophe is possible only from the future, and this is what Hölderlin calls the overturn of time. Hence, the necessity of translating in foreign countries, so that the Event can finally take place. The modern meaning and practice of translation are thus understandable thanks to the Hölderlinian question: how is it possible to translate within the Foreign, in the language that is already nearly lost?
