Quand les artistes jugent les théâtres. La valeur différenciée des lieux de spectacle à l’aune des carrières artistiques When artists judge the value of theatre locations through the prism of their own careers

Résumé

Cet article se propose de réintroduire la dimension artistique dans l’évaluation des théâtres, sans considérer celle-ci uniquement du point de vue des oeuvres. Cette focalisation sur la valeur artistique, de même que les récents et nombreux travaux sur les métiers artistiques, a laissé dans l’ombre le rôle joué par les lieux dans l’organisation de la profession. Quelle est la valeur d’un théâtre pour les artistes amenés à fréquenter ces lieux de création, de production et de diffusion de leurs oeuvres ? À l’appui d’une enquête qualitative menée auprès de metteurs en scène et de chorégraphes, nous montrerons que les artistes convoquent trois dimensions dès lors qu’ils sont amenés à juger de la valeur d’un théâtre : matérielle et technique, le théâtre est apprécié en tant qu’outil de travail ; identitaire et artistique, le théâtre est évalué en tant que partenaire ; réputationnelle, le théâtre est considéré en tant qu’intermédiaire. Au final, la prise en compte de cette évaluation tridimensionnelle met au jour une hiérarchie complexe entre les théâtres, lesquels apparaissent comme un outil de régulation important de la profession. En tant qu’acteur intermédiaire sur le marché du travail artistique, les théâtres contribuent à la valorisation et à la sélection sociale des créateurs. Plus encore, cette hiérarchisation entre théâtres révèle une division horizontale du travail largement dépendante du parcours de l’artiste et des conditions d’élaboration de son oeuvre.

Abstract

This article intends to reintroduce the artistic dimension in the evaluation of theaters, without only considering it from the point of view of artistic works. This focus on the artistic value, as well as on the recent and abundant academic work on the artistic professions, has disregarded the role played by the institutions in the organization of the profession. How do artists who evolve in these institutions of creation, production and dissemination of their works value a theater ? In support of a qualitative survey of directors and choreographers, we will show that artists resort to three dimensions when they evaluate a theater : the material and technical aspects since a theater is appreciated as a working tool ; the identity and artistic dimension since a theater is evaluated as a partner ; the reputational impact since a theater is considered as an intermediary organization. In the end, taking this three-dimensional evaluation into account reveals a complex hierarchy among theaters which appear to be an important regulatory tool for the profession. As an intermediary contributor to the artistic labor market, theaters play a role in the value and social selection of creators. But above all, this hierarchy among theaters reveals a horizontal division of labor which largely depends on an artist’s career and the conditions of elaboration of their artistic work.

Resumen

Este artículo se propone restablecer la dimensión artística en la evaluación de los teatros, sin considerar ésta únicamente desde el punto de vista de las obras. Esta focalización en el valor artístico, así como los recientes y numerosos trabajos acerca de los oficios artísticos, han dejado en la sombra el papel desempeñado por los lugares en la organización de la profesión. ¿Cuál es el valor de un teatro para los artistas que asisten a estos lugares de creación, producción y difusión de sus obras ? Apoyados en una investigación cualitativa realizada entre directores de cine y coreógrafos, aquí mostraremos que los artistas convocan tres dimensiones cuando se trata de juzgar el valor de un teatro : material y técnica, el teatro es apreciado como herramienta de trabajo ; identitaria y artística, el teatro es evaluado como asociado ; reputacional, el teatro está considerado como intermediario. Finalmente, la consideración de esta evaluación tridimensional revela una jerarquía compleja entre los teatros, que surgen como un instrumento de regulación importante de la profesión. Como actor intermediario en el mercado del trabajo artístico, los teatros contribuyen a la valorización y a la selección social de los creadores. Más aún, esta jerarquización entre teatros revela una división horizontal del trabajo ampliamente dependiente de la trayectoria del artista y de las condiciones de la elaboración de su obra.
