Résumé
Le voile musulman demeure un sujet contentieux dans les courants dominants de la culture occidentale et ses médias. Son usage métonymique qui en fait une abréviation visuelle de la musulmane opprimée, et par extension de la misogynie ou de la violence de l’islam, s’oppose de façon nette aux nombreuses illustrations du voile dans la pratique artistique contemporaine des artistes d’origine musulmane qui aujourd’hui exposent et souvent vivent en Europe ou en Amérique du Nord. Cet article se penche d’abord sur cette divergence et sur ses significations sous-jacentes, pour ensuite dessiner trois discours alternatifs du voile que l’on retrouve dans l’art contemporain. Les oeuvres précises analysées et les nouveaux discours sur le voile qu’elles proposent réorientent le regard ; en déplaçant le voile, qui est un site qui tend à être mal traduit, ces discours reconfigurent le monde, et dévoilent des espaces possibles de communication et d’interactions transnationales.
Abstract
The Muslim veil is a contentious subject in mainstream western culture and media. Its continued metonymy as a visual shorthand for the oppressed Muslim woman and by extension the misogyny or violence of Islam stands however in sharp contrast to the numerous depictions of the veil in contemporary artistic practice produced by artists of Muslim descent who now exhibit and often live in the west. This article analyzes this discrepancy and its various subtexts before charting three alternative narratives of the veil found in contemporary art. The specific works examined and the new narratives of the veil they bring forward reorient the gaze ; by displacing the veil, a site of cross-cultural mistranslation, they remap the world and uncover the possible spaces of transnational literacy or communication.

El velo musulmán continúa siendo un tema contencioso en las corrientes dominantes de la cultura occidental y sus medios de comunicación. Su uso metonímico que en realidad es una abreviatura visual de la musulmana oprimida, y por extensión de la misoginia o de la violencia del Islam, se opone de manera neta a las numerosas ilustraciones del velo en la práctica artística contemporánea de los artistas de origen musulmán que exponen su obras hoy y que viven a menudo en Europa o Norteamérica. Este artículo examina en primer lugar esta divergencia y sus significados subyacentes, para a continuación dibujar tres discursos alternativos del velo que se encuentran en el arte contemporáneo. Las obras precisas analizadas y los nuevos discursos sobre el velo que ellas proponen reorientan la mirada ; al desplazar el velo, como objeto que tiende a comprenderse mal. Estos discursos reconfiguran el mundo, revelan espacios posibles de comunicación y de interacciones trasnacionales.
