Résumé
Compte rendu d'une enquête par entretiens auprès des habitants de Belfort (France), cet article tente de dégager, d'une part, les conditions d'émergence d'une perception esthétique, rendue problématique ici par la confrontation entre une œuvre publique, exposée hors musée, et des spectateurs profanes, étrangers au monde de l'art; et d'autre part, les conditions requises pour la "reconnaissance" des grands hommes représentés sur la fresque, au triple sens d'identification, d'acceptation de leur présence et d'approbation du travail de l'artiste. On essaie du même coup de comprendre pourquoi, malgré l'effet de sélection particulièrement puissant engendré par les différences de capital culturel ainsi révélées, il se dégage, des réactions du public, un effet de consensus quant à la valeur civique de l'œuvre - faute d'instruments permettant d'en apprécier la valeur proprement esthétique.
Summary
This paper reports the findings of an interview survey carried out among the inhabitants of Belfort (France) and attempts, on the one hand, to isolate the conditions necessary for the emergence of an esthetic perception, made problematical in this case by the confrontation between a public work of art exhibited outside a museum, and lay spectators, unfamiliar with the art world. On the other hand, it attempts to isolate the conditions required for the 'recognition' of great men represented in the fresco, in the triple sense of identification, acceptance of their presence and approbation of the artist's work. An attempt is made at the same time to understand why, in spite of the particularly strong effect of selection engendered by the differences in cultural capital revealed in this way, an effect of consensus may be seen in the reactions of the public as to the civic value of the work, lacking instruments for a truly esthetic appreciation of its value.
Resumen
Informe de una investigación por entrevistas dirigida a los habitantes de Belfort (France), este artículo intenta aclarar, por una parte, las condiciones de surgimiento de una percepción estética, convertida en problemática aquí por la confrontación entre una obra pública, expuesta fuera de los museos, y los espectadores profanos, extranjeros al mundo del arte; y por otra parte, las condiciones requeridas para el "reconocimiento" de grandes hombres; representados sobre un fresco, en el triple sentido de la identificación, de la aceptación de su presencia y de la aprobación del trabajo del artista. Se trata al mismo tiempo de comprender por qué, a pesar del efecto de selección particularmente potente engendrado por las diferencias de capital cultural de esta manera reveladas, se desprende, de las reacciones del público, un efecto de concenso en relación al valor cívico de la obra - a falta de instrumentos que permitan apreciar el valor propiamente estético.
