Au milieu du XIX^e siècle, le champ de l’éducation et de la formation ouvrières était laissé à l’initiative privée. L’État, pressé d’intervenir, crée en 1857 deux Chambres des arts et manufactures, The Board of Arts et Manufactures for Upper Canada et la Chambre des arts et manufactures du Bas-Canada. Jumelles, les deux Chambres ont pour mandat de sensibiliser la population aux nouvelles techniques, aux arts et aux sciences appliquées à l’industrie et, plus spécifiquement, de voir à la formation d’ouvriers qualifiés. Méconnues, les quinze premières années de la Chambre des arts et manufactures du Bas-Canada sont ici examinées dans leur contexte d’origine.

In the middle of the Nineteenth century, the education of workers was left in the hands of private initiatives. The State intervened in 1857, creating the Lower and Upper Canada Boards of Arts and Manufacture. The mandate of the Boards was to make the population aware of new technologies and sciences applied to industries and, more specifically, to assist in the training of qualified workers. The object of this paper is to look at the first fifteen years of existence of the Lower Canada Board and analyze the context of its creation and of its activities.

This article suggests that Sir William Logan's Geology of Canada can be read as a narrative describing the past dynamic changes that shaped the present structure of the earth. The author also suggests, since the foundation of nineteenth century geology was a bio-stratigraphic consensus that combined stratigraphy and the fossil record, that the use of a narrative offered Logan a dynamique method for presenting his central argument.

This article examines the role of technology and applied science in British Columbia's hard rock mining industry. It focuses on a transitional period, from the decline following the gold rushes of the mid century through to the emergence in 1906 of Cominco, a vertically-integrated mining and smelting complex typical of the large mining companies of the twentieth century. Although many contemporary observers held a naive faith in the possibilities of science and technology, the article argues that the transition to "modern mining" was more difficult and more complex than they had anticipated and its outcome a good deal more ambivalent.

Cet article analyse le rôle des sciences et des technologies appliquées à l’industrie minière en Colombie-Britannique, au cours de la période de transition qui va du milieu du 19^e siècle jusqu’à l’émergence, en 1906, de Cominco, complexe industriel intégré de la mine aux fonderies, typique des grandes compagnies minières du 20^e siècle. Bien que maints observateurs de l’époque étaient persuadés que le développement scientifique et technologique constituait un facteur de progrès, cette étude suggère que le passage des méthodes traditionnelles aux techniques « modernes » a été plus difficile que prévu et que les résultats obtenus sont plutôt ambivalents.

This paper is a critical review of recent historical literature relating to nineteenth and twentieth-century European-based technology in the North American forest. My discussion is limited to the industrial technologies of logging, sawmilling, pulp and paper milling, and forestry. These technologies will be discussed with reference to three issues in the history of technology: first, the nature of technological change; second, the environmental and social impacts of technology; and finally, the role of social values in determining choices of technology. Throughout, there will be an attempt to compare Canadian and American perspectives, when these diverge.

Cet propose une revue de la littérature concernant l’adoption en Amérique du nord, au cours des 19^e et 20^e siècle, de technologies forestières européennes. On discutera surtout du traitement des billes de bois, des technologies touchant les moulin à scie et les pâtes et papier, et ce en relation avec trois thèmes importants en histoire des technologies : 1) la nature des changements techniques, 2) l’environnement et les impacts sociaux des technologies et 3) le rôle des valeurs sociales dans le choix des technologies. Adoptant une perspective comparative, on signalera également les différences entre le cas américain et le cas canadien.
