Abstract
Many people with panic disorder remain dissatisfied with the perceived treatment’s outcomes. The goal of this study is to document their perspective on avoidance and exposure to better understand how it influences their recovery. Eight participants took part in semi-directed interviews that were analyzed using the thematization method of Paillé and Mucchielli (2016). We identify 14 main factors that influence their propensity to expose themselves to anxiety-provoking situations or to avoid them. Through this fine analysis, this study confirms in the field the theoretical model as proposed by empirical and quantitative research. It also contributes to a better understanding of panic disorder, suggests clinical recommendations and identifies avenues for future research.
