RÉSUMÉ
L’objectif de l’étude est d’établir les conditions sémantiques, discursives et pragmatiques qui favorisent ou, au contraire, empêchent l’interprétation dite « inverse » de la subordonnée temporelle postposée introduite par quand ou lorsque. Les phrases à subordonnée temporelle postposée qui permettent une interprétation « inverse » sont soumises au traitement à l’aide du concept de point de vue. Ce traitement vise à mettre en évidence le rapport entre la localisation spatio-temporelle du sujet de conscience (porteur du point de vue) et la possibilité de l’interprétation « inverse » de la subordonnée, ainsi qu’à éclaircir les causes sémantiques, discursives et pragmatiques des deux effets de sens les plus saillants de l’interprétation « inverse » : l’effet de surprise (l’événement décrit dans la subordonnée est ressenti comme inattendu) et l’effet d’interruption (l’événement décrit dans la subordonnée semble interrompre l’action décrite dans la principale).
ABSTRACT
The aim of the present paper is to specify the semantic, textual, and pragmatic conditions which promote or, on the contrary, impede the so-called "inverse" (or "narrative") interpretation of the postponed quand-causes in French. Sentences with quand-clauses that permit an "inverse" interpretation are analyzed in light of the viewpoint concept. This treatment aims, on the one hand, to emphazise the relationship between the spatio-temporal localization of the individual whose viewpoint is represented and the possibility of an "inverse" interpretation and, on the other hand, to clarify the semantic, textual, and pragmatic causes of the two most prominent components of the "inverse" interpretation: the surprise effect (the event described in the quand-clause is perceived as unexpected) and the interruption effect (the event described in the quand-clause seems to interrupt the action described in the main clause).
