Résumé

Les représentations coloniales des Autochtones au cinéma ont été étudiées et critiquées depuis longtemps. Cette relation souvent discriminante avec les images projetées fut cependant amorcée deux siècles avant le cinéma, au tournant du XVIII^e siècle. La lanterne magique, inventée en 1659, parvint rapidement en Amérique du Nord où elle fut employée pour impressionner les gens des Premières Nations, afin de stimuler leur intérêt pour le commerce des « pelleteries » et leur coopération avec les Européens, Français et Anglais. Une recherche en cours sur l’histoire de la lanterne magique a permis de documenter les rencontres initiales entre les Premières Nations et cet appareil, qui servit très tôt à altérer leur identité et celle du territoire où ils vivaient.

Abstract

Colonial representations of Indigenous Peoples in cinema have been studied and criticized for a long time. This discriminatory relationship with projected images was however initiated two centuries before the cinema, at the turn of the 18th century. The magic lantern, invented in 1659, quickly reached North America where it was used to impress the people of the First Nations in order to stimulate their interest in the «fur trade» and their cooperation with Europeans, French and English. Ongoing research into the history of the magic lantern has documented the initial encounters between the First Nations and this device, which early on served to alter their identity and that of the land on which they lived.

Resumen

Las representaciones coloniales de los indígenas en el cine se han estudiado y criticado durante mucho tiempo. Sin embargo, esta relación, a menudo discriminatoria, con las imágenes proyectadas, comenzó dos siglos antes del cine, a principios del siglo XVIII. La linterna mágica, inventada en 1659, llegó rápidamente a Norteamérica, donde se utilizó para impresionar a los pueblos de las Primeras Naciones, con el fin de estimular su interés por el comercio de pieles y su cooperación con los europeos, franceses e ingleses. Una investigación en curso sobre la historia de la linterna mágica ha documentado los primeros encuentros entre las Primeras Naciones y este aparato, que se utilizó tempranamente para alterar su identidad y la del territorio en el que vivían.
