Depuis son premier roman (Temps pascal, 1982), toute l’entreprise littéraire de Daniel Poliquin interroge activement des rapports de filiation. D’un roman à l’autre, les relations père et fils sont mises en question de manière à substituer à la filiation du Nom-du-Père une filiation orientée par une nouvelle éthique, où le fils choisirait librement qui lui tient symboliquement lieu de père, et vice versa. Cette éthique, qui est particulièrement prononcée dans le dernier roman de l’auteur, L’Homme de paille (1998), marque une coupure fondamentale avec l’origine et la mémoire culturelle. Il s’agit d’une conception qui ne repose plus sur l’ancien régime des pères (le père autoritaire vis-à-vis du fils), ni même sur le régime moderne des pairs (le père et le fils dans un rapport d’égalité), mais qui récuse tout simplement la loi de la filiation en lui opposant la volonté éthique d’un sujet libéré de sa propre Histoire/histoire. Cependant, à l’égard de cette conception d’une généalogie à la carte, le personnage de Poliquin revient inévitablement à la mère, figure par laquelle triomphe une filiation sans père.

Since his first novel Temps pascal (1982), the aim of Daniel Poliquin’s literary project has consisted in an active interrogation of the filiation rapports. In his novels, the relationships between fathers and sons are constantly questioned in such a way as to replace the Name-of-the-father filiation with a filiation based upon a new ethics, one in which the son would freely choose his own symbolic father. This ethics, which is particularly emphasised in Poliquin’s latest novel, The Straw Man (L’Homme de paille, 1998), marks the expression of a fundamental break with the origin of cultural memory. What we have here is a conception that rests neither on the old form of fatherhood (based on the authority of the father), nor on the modern, egalitarian, relationship between fathers and sons, but rather one that challenges the filiation law by confronting it with an ethical will of a subject free from its own history. Nevertheless, vis-à-vis this genealogy à la carte, the character of Poliquin’s novels makes an inevitable return to the mother, a figure through which triumphs a fatherless filiation.

Cet article part de l’hypothèse que la biographie d’écrivain, par l’inventivité de son écriture qui favorise le déploiement des potentialités du rapport à l’autre, représente une forme singulière du récit de filiation. À l’appui, quelque cinq biofictions, retenues ici pour illustrer trois procès distincts – médiatisation, appropriation, tension – décelables à la plus ou moins grande distance qui marque la relation entre le biographe et son biographé. Affaire d’énonciation plus que d’énoncé, la biographie relève d’un protocole discursif qui exige la représentation de cette relation. Un inventaire de procédés vient soutenir cette affirmation en même temps que mettre au jour les formes qui indexent le déni ou le désir de filiation.

The starting point of this article is that, hypothetically, the writer’s biography, by virtue of the inventiveness of its writing, represents a special form of the filiation narrative. Five “ biofictions ” will be used here to illustrate three distinct processes – mediatisation, appropriation, and tension – whose choice is based upon the variable distance that marks the relationship between the biographer and the biographed. More a question of utterance than wording, biography has to do with a discursive protocol that requires the representation of this relationship.

Dans son film Le Pornographe, Bertrand Bonello cristallise le conflit entre père et fils dans ce qu’il a d’actuel et de paradoxal : la confusion entre les pères et les fils qui rend caduque toute filiation en même temps qu’elle empêche tout véritable rejet du passé. Entre le sexe à l’état pur (qui est le credo du père devenu pornographe dans les années 1970) et l’idéal de pureté du fils qui désire avoir un enfant, entre l’ascétisme de la pornographie associé au père et la symbolique romantique du fils, la confusion s’établit sans qu’il soit possible ni au père ni au fils d’accéder à la transmission. Le film dévoile ainsi l’aporie qui est au coeur de la filiation, et que vient illustrer éloquemment la reprise du motif esthétique et théologique de la « grâce ».

In his film, The Pornographer, Bernard Bonello crystallises the conflict between father and son in its most topical, as well as its most paradoxical, sense : the confusion between fathers and sons, which negates all filiation and, at the same time, prevents any true rejection of the past. Between pure sex (which is the creed of the father who becomes a pornographer) and the ideal of purity of the son, who wants to have a child ; between the asceticism of pornography associated with the father and the romantic symbolic of the son, confusion is established and access to transmission is denied to both father and son. The film reveals the aporia that is at the heart of filiation, eloquently illustrated by the aesthetic and theological motif of “ grace.”

W or the Memory of Childhood presents a rewriting of a childhood fantasy describing an Olympic society governed by sadistic laws. This description reveals a “ construction ” by which Perec reconstitutes his broken, forgotten, abolished filiation. In this violent and cruel fiction, the writer tries to reach the lost body of the Mother (Perec’s mother disappeared, when he was a child, in an extermination camp).
