Résumé

Cette étude brosse un portrait de la flore forestière de l’archipel d’Hochelaga (Montréal et ses environs). De 2009 à 2017, des inventaires réalisés dans 84 îlots boisés ont permis de recenser 642 taxons de trachéophytes (dont 67 % sont indigènes), soit environ le cinquième de la flore vasculaire québécoise. Malgré son statut d’espèce vulnérable, l’érable noir (Acer nigrum) est fréquent à Montréal et confère un caractère distinct à plusieurs bois, contrairement à d’autres espèces en situation précaire rencontrées de façon sporadique. Une vingtaine de taxons exotiques recensés ne figurent pas encore sur les listes d’espèces naturalisées. Les bois anciens se distinguent par une flore indigène diversifiée, dominée entre autres par Acer saccharum, Carya cordiformis, Cornus alternifolia et Solidago flexicaulis. À l’inverse, les petits bois urbains, souvent issus du reboisement spontané de terres agricoles, présentent une flore appauvrie dominée par des espèces pionnières, des lianes et plusieurs plantes exotiques envahissantes, dont Acer negundo, Anthriscus sylvestris et Rhamnus cathartica. L’omniprésence de substrats calcaires favorise les espèces calcicoles, tandis que les rares sites sur grès, notamment sur l’île Perrot, enrichissent la diversité régionale par une flore acidophile distincte. Les données de l’étude offrent une base solide pour assurer un suivi écologique rigoureux et, plus largement, pour orienter les actions de conservation axées sur la représentativité des habitats et le maintien de la diversité floristique régionale.

Abstract

This study provides an overview of the forest flora of the Hochelaga Archipelago, also known as the Montréal Islands (Québec, Canada). Between 2009 and 2017, surveys conducted in 84 wooded patches documented 642 vascular plant taxa (67% of which were native), representing roughly one fifth of the vascular flora of the province. In contrast to those at-risk species encountered only sporadically, the black maple (Acer nigrum), which is listed as vulnerable in Québec, is frequent in Montréal and gives a distinctive appearance to several of its woodlands. Approximately 20 of the exotic taxa detected during the study are not yet listed as naturalized in the province. Older woodlands were distinguished by a diverse native flora dominated notably by Acer saccharum, Carya cordiformis, Cornus alternifolia, and Solidago flexicaulis. In contrast, small urban woodlands, often established through natural reforestation of former agricultural land, were typically species-poor and dominated by pioneer species, lianas, and invasive exotics such as Acer negundo, Anthriscus sylvestris, and Rhamnus cathartica. The widespread presence of calcareous substrates supports calcicolous species, whereas rare sandstone-based sites, particularly on Île Perrot, enhance regional diversity by hosting a distinct acidophilous flora. The dataset generated by this study provides a solid foundation for rigorous ecological monitoring and, more broadly, for guiding conservation actions focused on habitat representativeness and the maintenance of regional floristic diversity.
