Abstract
This study investigates the impact of gender diversity on the board of directors (BoD) on the financial performance of international French SMEs. For the overall sample, our findings indicate that the presence of women on the board has a negative and significant effect on return on assets (ROA). However, when dividing the sample according to the mode of internationalization, we find that the presence of at least one woman on the board positively and significantly influences the financial performance of SMEs that internationalize exclusively through exports. Conversely, the presence of women on the board negatively affects the financial performance of French SMEs that operate abroad solely through foreign subsidiaries, as well as those combining both export and subsidiary-based internationalization modes.
