Abstract
This research investigates the reception of French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) during the Cold War by focusing on the journal Shijie Wenxue, which was the only journal to publish translations under the PRC’s Communist regime until 1978. The article analyses the selection and de-selection of Sartre’s works for translation and publication in this journal, the triangulated translation of Sartre’s play La Putain respectueuse [The Respectful Prostitute] and the paratextual framing of Sartre and his works. This research adopts Lefevere’s (1992) theory of ideology and patronage, critical discourse analysis (CDA) and Baker’s (2016) narrative theory as theoretical frameworks. The researchers found ideology and politics influenced the reception of Sartre’s works in the PRC. We did not detect any translations or introductory articles which ran counter to the meta-narratives of the PRC during the Cold War. Instead, it was found that the actors (translators and editors) used a reframing strategy that involved adding an introductory text to the Chinese translations and further manipulating the texts, such as changing the ending of the stories, in order to enhance certain narratives while foreclosing others. The researchers also found that the public narratives on Sartre in the PRC underwent several shifts during this period.

Résumé
Cette recherche se penche sur la réception du philosophe français Jean-Paul Sartre dans la République populaire de Chine (RPC) pendant la Guerre froide, en se concentrant sur la revue Shijie Wenxue, qui fut le seul périodique à publier des traductions sous le régime communiste de la RPC avant 1978. L’article analyse la sélection et la désélection des oeuvres de Sartre pour la traduction et la publication dans cette revue, la traduction triangulée de sa pièce La Putain respectueuse ainsi que l’encadrement péritextuel de Sartre et de ses oeuvres. En utilisant l’analyse critique du discours (ACD), la théorie narrative de Baker (2016) ainsi que le concept d’idéologie et de mécénat de Lefevere (1992), les auteurs ont constaté que l’idéologie et la politique ont directement influencé la réception des oeuvres de Sartre en RPC. Il n’a été trouvé aucune traduction ou article d’introduction qui s’opposait aux méta-récits en vigueur dans le contexte de la Guerre froide. L’étude révèle que les acteurs impliqués dans la traduction et la publication des écrits de Sartre ont utilisé une stratégie de recadrage, qui consistait notamment à ajouter un texte d’introduction aux traductions chinoises et à manipuler les textes en modifiant par exemple la fin des histoires, afin de renforcer certains récits tout en en excluant d’autres. Les auteurs ont également relevé plusieurs changements dans l’image et les récits publics de Sartre dans la RPC au cours de cette période.

Resumen
Este proyecto investiga el proceso de recepción de la obra de Jean-Paul Sartre en la República Popular China (RPC) durante la Guerra Fría, publicada en la única revista en la que aparecieron traducciones durante el régimen comunista hasta 1978: Shijie Wenxue. El artículo analiza la selección y deselección de las obras de Sartre para su traducción y publicación en esta revista, la traducción triangulada de la obra de teatro de Sartre La Putain respectueuse (La prostituta respetuosa), y el encuadre paratextual de Sartre y sus obras. Esta investigación adopta el concepto de ideología y mecenazgo de Lefevere (1992), el análisis crítico del discurso (ACD) y la teoría narrativa de Baker (2016) como marco teórico. Los investigadores encontraron que la ideología y la política influyeron en la recepción de las obras de Sartre en la República Popular China (RPC). Si bien los autores no han detectado traducciones o artículos introductorios sobre la figura de Sartre que se opusieran a estas metanarrativas, sí han podido trazar las redes de actores (traductores y editores) que participaron en la reestructuración narrativa de su obra. Esta se llevó a cabo mediante la inserción de un comentario a las traducciones y mediante la manipulación de los textos a través de una serie de estrategias, tales como la modificación del final de las historias con el objeto de acentuar ciertas narrativas y opacar otras. Asimismo, los autores exploran la evolución de las narrativas públicas sobre Sartre en RPC a lo largo de este periodo.
