Abstract
In this paper, we contextualize Margaret Sam‑Cromarty’s work in order to highlight its importance to Indigenous book history in lands that we now call Quebec. The Eeyou poet published three books between 1992 and 2000, all of which are accessible in bilingual English-French editions. Nevertheless, she is not mentioned in any of the French or English anthologies that have contributed to the institutionalization of Indigenous literatures. At first glance, this exclusion and lack of studies on Sam‑Cromarty’s books appear to be a form of marginalization. However, when retracing the history of these publications, a network of relationships supporting her work emerges, as does her importance within the Eeyou community. To integrate her work into the province’s Indigenous book history, we situate it in the context of the 1990s, present her poetry collection James Bay Memoirs (1992), and examine the different places in which Sam-Cromarty’s three books were published. In this way, we aim to better understand her experience as an Eeyou writer publishing before the institutionalization of Indigenous literatures in Quebec.
