Résumé

Véritable actant du récit, la foule des deux premiers livres de Notre-Dame de Paris a pour principale fonction de laisser Gringoire le bec à l’eau, littéralement. En étudiant la façon dont le texte de Victor Hugo instaure l’équivalence métaphorique (usitée) entre foule et eau, il devient possible de nuancer la perception que la critique hugolienne s’est faite des foules de ce grand roman parisien. Dès lors, on prend mieux la mesure des forces naturelles et culturelles déterminant le destin de ce poète qui, dans les cent premières pages de l’oeuvre, tient le haut du pavé sans cesser de dégringoler.

Abstract

In the first and second books of The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, the crowd is a true agent of the narrative, and its main function is to leave Gringoire high and dry. This paper examines the way in which Victor Hugo’s text establishes the metaphorical equivalence between crowd and water, and qualifies the perception that critics have had of the crowds in this great Parisian novel. From then on, we can better measure the natural and cultural forces determining the destiny of this poet who, in the first hundred pages of the work, holds the upper hand all the while tumbling down.
