Résumé
L’afropolitanisme apparaît comme un contre-discours visant les représentations sociales et médiatiques des Africains. Il produit cependant une autre image qui peut à son tour relever du stéréotype. Les romans étudiés, Americanah de Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, We Need New Names de NoViolet Bulawayo, Ghana Must Go de Taiye Selasi et Behold the Dreamers d’Imbolo Mbue, confèrent une nouvelle complexité à ces images. En effet, les romancières construisent leurs personnages non seulement comme des migrants, mais aussi en fonction de leur genre. À l’intersection de ces deux caractéristiques, ils doivent trouver leur place : l’espace devient un enjeu majeur des romans, complexifié par cette double détermination des personnages. Ainsi, loin de faire de la multiplicité des espaces traversés une somme d’expériences enrichissantes, ces écrivaines la présentent plutôt comme le résultat d’une incomplétude, d’un manque fondamental. La construction de la narration nourrit ainsi une réflexion sur le rapport de l’individu au groupe.
Abstract
Afropolitanism appears as a counter-discourse against the social and media representations of Africans. Yet it produces another representation that can in turn be deemed stereotypical. The novels under study, Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, We Need New Names by NoViolet Bulawayo, Ghana Must Go by Taiye Selasi and Behold the Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue, endow this representation with a new complexity. The novelists indeed cast their characters not only as migrants but also in terms of gender. They thus have to find a place at the crossroads between these two modes of characterization: space therefore becomes a crucial point in the novels. Far from turning the various spatial crossings into the addition of fulfilling experiences, the writers further show that they are instead the result of an inability for the protagonists to define themselves. As a consequence, the structure of the narratives sheds light on and questions the connection between the individual and the group.
