Résumé
Les conceptions actuelles du temps dans l’étude de la divination en Afrique nous contraignent à choisir entre les techniques prophétiques et les techniques rétrospectives. Confrontés au fait que la divination prophétique est peu fréquente en Afrique subsaharienne, nous nous tournons vers la divination que l’on appelle rétrospective. Et cependant, ces méthodes africaines qualifiées de rétrospectives sont orientées vers l’avenir. En se basant sur ses recherches sur les paniers de divination au nord-ouest de la Zambie, ainsi que sur les travaux de Bourdieu, Gell, Guyer et Zeitlyn, Silva démontre que l’orientation vers l’avenir des paniers de divination s’inscrit dans les dynamiques internes à chaque séance. La divination par panier recouvre l’intégralité de la trajectoire allant du diagnostic au pronostic. En outre, les devins tiennent chaque séance à l’intersection de deux états temporels qui se croisent et orientent le parcours des participants : le voyage divinatoire à travers le temps et l’espace, et les signes matériels que contiennent les paniers. Cela permet au passé d’être interprété rétrospectivement, à la lumière des préoccupations du présent, et à l’avenir d’être exposé comme un prolongement du présent. En se concentrant sur la temporalité du présent-en-cours-de-réalisation, un long présent qui s’étend du passé récent au futur proche, les méthodes de divination rétrospective peuvent apporter une aide au consultant en plus de contribuer à l’étude du temps et de l’avenir.

Abstract
Current notions of time in the study of African divination press us to choose between mantic and retrospective techniques. Faced with the fact that mantic divination is infrequent in sub-Saharan Africa, we reach out to the retrospective label. Yet so-called African retrospective methods are oriented toward the future. Drawing on her research on basket divination in northwest Zambia, as well as the work of Bourdieu, Gell, Guyer, and Zeitlyn, Silva shows that the future orientation of basket divination is embedded in the internal dynamics of each séance. Basket divination encompasses the entire trajectory from diagnosis to prognosis. In addition, diviners frame each séance in terms of two intersected time shapes that orient the séance participants in their travels : the divination journey through time and space, and the material signs contained in the baskets. As a result, the past is interpreted retrospectively, in the light of present concerns, and the future is prospectively laid out as an extension of the present. By focusing on the temporality of the present-in-process, a long present that extends to the near past and the near future, the retrospective methods of divination are able to help the consulters as well as contribute to the study of time and the future.

Resumen
Las concepciones actuales del tiempo en el estudio de la adivinación en África nos obligan a escoger entre las técnicas proféticas y las técnicas retrospectivas. Confrontados con el hecho que la adivinación profética es más bien rara en África subsahariana, nos hemos volcado sobre la adivinación denominada retrospectiva. Y sin embargo, esos métodos africanos calificados de retrospectivos están orientados hacia el futuro. Basándonos en las investigaciones sobre los cestos de adivinación en el nordeste de Zambia, así como en los trabajos de Bourdieu, Gell, Guyer y Zeitlyn, Silva demuestra que la orientación hacia el futuro de los cestos de adivinación se inscribe en las dinámicas internas de cada sesión. La adivinación con el cesto recubre la integralidad de la trayectoria que va del diagnostico al pronóstico. Además, los adivinos celebran cada sesión en la intersección de dos estados temporales que se cruzan y orientan el historial de los participantes : el viaje adivinatorio a través del tiempo y del espacio, y los signos materiales que contienen los cestos. Eso permite al pasado de ser interpretado retrospectivamente, a la luz de las preocupaciones del presente, y al futuro de ser expuesto como una prolongación del presente. Concentrándose en la temporalidad del presente-que-se-está-haciendo, un largo presente que se extiende desde el pasado hacia el futuro inmediato, los métodos de adivinación retrospectiva pueden aportar una ayuda al interesado, además de contribuir al estudio del tiempo y del futuro.
