Résumé
Cet article explore comment les missionnaires jésuites en Nouvelle-France ont appris et ont adapté l’onondaga, une langue autochtone, à partir de leurs connaissances préexistantes du wendat. L’étude du Dictionaire huron et hiroquois onontaheronon (Manuscrit 017), un manuscrit trilingue français-wendat-onondaga, montre comment le document met en lumière les dynamiques d’acquisition linguistique et les défis rencontrés par les jésuites dans la mission de Sainte-Marie de Gannentaha au xviie siècle. L’analyse révèle des écarts significatifs entre les traductions en wendat et en onondaga, témoignant d’un apprentissage progressif et inachevé. Ce dictionnaire illustre en outre la collaboration entre les missionnaires et les locuteurs autochtones.

Abstract
This article examines how Jesuit missionaries in New France learned and adapted the Onondaga language using their prior knowledge of Wendat. Through the study of the Dictionaire huron et hiroquois onontaheronon (Manuscrit 017), a trilingual French-Wendat-Onondaga manuscript, it highlights the linguistic learning processes and challenges faced by the Jesuits during their mission at Sainte-Marie de Gannentaha in the 17th century. The analysis reveals significant disparities between the Wendat and Onondaga translations, reflecting a gradual and incomplete learning process. This dictionary also demonstrates the collaboration between missionaries and Indigenous language speakers.
