Abstract
It is often said that ethnography can only be learned in the field. However, few studies have looked at how such teaching takes place outside the classroom. Through a reflective exercise conducted jointly by two professors and four students, this article suggests that teaching ethnography is a relational process: it involves forging bonds of trust with other members of the research team, with people in the field, and with one’s own knowledge and experience. The article also stresses the importance of in situ learning and accompaniment, and the need to go beyond traditional roles within research teams.
