Les études rurales québécoises entre les approches monographiques et typologiques Rural Québec research, from the monographic to the typological approach

Résumé

Partant du postulant que la ruralité est toujours une réalité significative dans une société québécoise rapidement devenue urbaine au cours du XX^e siècle, l’auteur illustre l’évolution du regard des sciences sociales sur le monde rural. Il constate que les premiers travaux, sur près d’un siècle, consistaient généralement en des monographies de communautés dont certaines restent des classiques en leur genre. Avec la modernisation de cette société, c’est la différenciation interne au monde rural, autorisant l’usage de ruralité au pluriel, qui intéresse les sciences sociales. Souvent stimulées par des commandes publiques, elles s’emploient à saisir la différenciation sociale au sein des milieux ruraux en construisant diverses typologies pour rendre compte de cette variance. L’auteur postule que la traditionnelle différenciation rurale – urbaine s’est estompée ; elle ferait maintenant place à une forte différenciation au sein même des milieux ruraux dont la caractérisation est un des défis actuels des études rurales. Ce défi est amplifié par le fait que la ruralité n’est pas une réalité facilement objectivable mais une construction sociale, ce qui ouvre un nouveau champ de recherche dont l’auteur montre le potentiel explicatif : rendre intelligibles les différents processus de construction sociale de la ruralité selon les acteurs et les territoires.

Abstract

Starting from the postulate that the rural sector continues to be a significant reality in a Québec society that underwent rapid urbanization in the 20th century, this paper illustrates the changes in how the social sciences view the rural world. It is noted that the earliest writings in this area, for nearly a century, generally took the form of monographs on communities, some of which remain classics in their field. With the modernization of this society came a tendency to differentiate within the rural sector, allowing a pluralistic approach to the rural reality, which was taken up by the social sciences. Often stimulated by public-sector mandates, the social sciences undertook to capture the social differentiation in rural communities by constructing various typologies to account for this variation. Here it is postulated that the traditional rural – urban distinction has faded, now making way for a strong differentiation even within rural communities, the description of which is one of the current challenges in rural studies. This challenge is amplified by the fact that the rural reality is not easy to define objectively, but is a social construct, which opens the way to a new field of research, of which the explanatory potential is demonstrated here: to make intelligible the different processes of social construction of the rural reality, according to the various stakeholders and territories.
