European strains of Armillaria cepistipes were reported to be interfertile with strains from three American Armillaria species known as North American Biological Species (NABS) V (A sinapina), NABS X and NABS XI. Such interfertility between species raises some doubts about using different Latin binomials for species capable of mating. This interfertility was reinvestigated by mating 24 haploid isolates of European A cepistipes with 23 isolates of A sinapinafrom North America and Asia. Individual pairings were independently performed at least once at Universite Laval, Canada and at INRA Clermont-Ferrand, France. From the 420 interspecific pairings performed at Laval, two were positive and seven were ambiguous for a total of 2.1% of all the pairings. From the 506 pairings made at Clermont-Ferrand, 10 were positive and 24 were ambiguous for a total of 6.7%. The differences in the pairing results may be explained by incubation temperatures, and the different types and concentrations of malt extract used at each laboratory. The low levels of interfertility found between A. cepistipes and A. sinapina may result from the absence of genetic barriers that are usually present between sympatric species. This low level of interfertility reflects differences in morphology, distribution, and habitat for these two species of Armillaria and this supports the retention of different species denominations.

Des études ont rapporté que des lignées européennes d'Armillaria cepistipes étaient interfertiles avec trois lignées américaines d'Armillaria désignées par les termes espèce biologique nord-américaine (NABS) V (A sinapina), NABS X et NABS XI. Une telle interfertilité entre les espèces soulève des doutes au sujet de l'utilisation de binômes latins distincts pour des espèces pouvant se reproduire. Cette interfertilité a été ré-examinée en mettant 24 isolats haploïdes d'A cepistipes européen en présence de 23 isolats 6'A. sinapina d'Amérique du Nord et d'Asie. Les appariements individuels ont été effectués de façon indépendante au moins une fois à l'Université Laval (Canada) et à NNRA Clermont-Ferrand (France). Des 420 appariements interspécifiques effectués à l'Université Laval, deux étaient positifs et sept étaient ambigus, pour un total de 2,1 % de tous les appariements. Des 506 appariements effectués à Clermont-Ferrand, 10 étaient positifs et 24 étaient ambigus pour un total de 6,7 % des appariements. Les différences dans les résultats de ces appariements peuvent être expliquées par les températures d'incubation, ainsi que par les différents types et concentrations d'extrait de malt utilisés dans chaque laboratoire. Les bas niveaux d'interfertilité trouvés entre A cepistipes et A. sinapina peuvent résulter de l'absence de barrières génétiques habituellement présentes entre des espèces sympatriques. Ce bas niveau d'interfertilité reflète des différences entre la morphologie, la répartition et les habitats des deux espèces d'Armillaria, et appuie la conservation de dénominations d'espèces distinctes.

La maladie du chancre du noyer cendré, causée par le Sirococcus clavigignenti-juglandacearum, affecte principalement le noyer cendré, Juglans cinerea, bien que le noyer noir, Juglans nigra, et les noyers hybrides puissent en être atteints. La maladie est présente dans plusieurs États américains ainsi qu'en Ontario et au Québec. Au Québec, elle a été rapportée pour la première fois en 1990, dans la région de Fort-Coulonge, en Outaouais. Depuis, de nouveaux foyers d'infection ont été notés en forêt naturelle ainsi que dans une plantation. En 1995, elle a été observée pour la première fois sur des semis de noyer dans deux pépinières forestières québécoises. Cette détection constitue le premier cas documenté de la maladie sur des semis de noyer cendré et de noyer noir dans des pépinières forestières.

Although the Sirococcus canker of butternut, caused by Sirococcus clavigignenti-juglandacearum, has caused damage only to butternut, Juglans cinerea, black walnut, Juglans nigra, and hybrids of walnut are also susceptible to a certain degree. The disease is present in the United States, in Ontario and in Quebec. In Quebec, the disease was first reported in 1990 near Fort-Coulonge, in the Outaouais region. Since then, new infection sites have been observed in natural stands and in one plantation. In 1995, this disease was isolated for the first time from seedlings in two forest nurseries in Quebec. This constitutes the first report of the disease on butternut and black walnut seedlings in forest nurseries.

The wasps Anaphes victus (Huber) and Anaphes listronoti (Huber) [Hymenoptera : Mymaridae] parasitize 50% of the eggs of carrot weevil, Listronotus oregonensis (Le Conte) [Coleoptera : Curculionidae] in Quebec and in Ontario. Attempts to detect either of these egg parasites from exposed carrot weevil eggs in Nova Scotia were unsuccessful. However, 48 individuals of a new species of parasitic wasp, Anaphes sp. nov. [Hymenoptera : Mymaridae], were detected in carrot (Daucus carota) fields in Nova Scotia, using carrots infested in growth chambers with carrot weevil eggs. Anaphes sp. nov. is distinguishable from the other parasites of the carrot weevil by characteristics of the forewing. Anaphes sp. nov. has a forewing length : width ratio greater than 7 :3 while A. victus and A. listronoti have a forewing length : width ratio of less than 6 : 7.

Des essais de piégeage en Nouvelle-Ecosse de l'un ou l'autre de ces parasites en exposant des oeufs du charançon de la carotte n'ont pas réussi.

Cependant, 48 spécimens d'une nouvelle espèce de guêpe, Anaphes sp. nov. [Hymenoptera : Mymaridae], ont été capturés dans des champs de carotte (Daucus carota) en Nouvelle-Ecosse, en utilisant des carottes infestées en chambre de croissance par des oeufs du charançon de la carotte. Anaphes sp. nov. se distingue des autres parasites du charançon de la carotte par des caractéristiques de la paire d'ailes antérieure. Anaphes sp. nov. possède un rapport longueur : largeur plus grand que 7 : 3 pour l'aile antérieure alors que chez A. victus et A. listronoti, ce même rapport est plus petit que 6: 7.

In order to know which species of Fusarium are ice nucleating and to determine the factors affecting their pathogenicity, ice nucleation activity (INA) was examined in Fusarium oxysporum, F. sporotrichioides, and F. tricinctum. Positive controls (lna+) used were F. acuminatum and F. avenaceum. The test for fungal INA was done with a simple and rapid tube nucleation assay. Twelve out of the 42 F. oxysporum isolates, and 8 out of 14 F. tricinctum isolates were lna+. No INA was detected in F sporotrichioides. In this test the threshold freezing temperature tended to increase with culture age, reaching a peak of -1°C in a few samples, which is as high as the warmest INA reported for bacteria, and higher than the INA detected in pure cultures of free-living fungi, lichen fungi, lichen algae and cyanobacteria. This is the first report of INA for F oxysporum.

Afin de mieux connaître les facteurs qui influencent leur pouvoir pathogène, nous avons recherché l'activité glaçogène chez trois espèces de Fusarium : le Fusarium oxysporum, le F sporotrichioides et le F tricinctum. Le F acuminatum et le F avenaceum ont servi de témoins positifs (lna+). La recherche de l'activité glaçogène a été effectuée à l'aide d'un test rapide et simple de nucleation en éprouvettes. Douze des 42 isolats testés du F oxysporum et 8 des 14 isolats testés du F tricinctum se sont révélés positifs alors que les isolats du F sporotrichioides furent négatifs. La température de nucleation tendait à augmenter avec le temps, pouvant atteindre -1°C, température maximale rapportée pour les bactéries et beaucoup plus élevée que la température maximale connue pour les champignons et pour les algues et les cyanobactéries de lichen en culture pure. C'est la première fois qu'une activité glaçogène est démontrée pour le F oxysporum.
