This paper looks at one rather ordinary participant in the 1837 Rebellion in Upper Canada. William Alves was a young carpenter who, caught up in the turmoil of the time, eagerly volunteered and, consequently, suffered severely. Pieced together from many fragments—surviving family letters, assorted contemporary newspapers, hundreds of archived government documents, and various historical references, including the inscriptions on two little boxes—his story can here be told.

Colonel W.W. Dodge, an American citizen in the Canadian Rebellion.was among the crew of a schooner captured by Canadian militia off Fort Malden on the Detroit River. He was wounded, imprisoned at Fort Malden, Toronto and Quebec in succession, and made a daring escape from the latter location with Dr. Edward A. Theller. One or two of his letters, written while incarcerated in Canada, were published in a few newspapers at the time, but now new letters have been found. These documents, which are presented here, enhance our understanding of the Patriot War.

This article surveys the history of the American social and political reaction to the events surrounding the Upper Canadian Rebellion. It focuses on the efforts of Michiganders and members of secret societies who supported the rebellion and Patriot War and on their experiences of engaging in revolutionary activities. By engaging with an enemy abroad, whether real, or imagined, these Americans sought a panacea to ease their generational and nationalistic angst. In return, they believed that liberating Canadians from British tyranny would cement their legacies in American history. This heroism, coupled with the formation of a secret society, the Hunters’ Lodges, temporarily distracted these Americans as well as some government officials from economic hardship, domestic and political turmoil, and perhaps most importantly, a rapidly changing world.

While a major focus in studies of the Rebellion has been the secret society the Patriot Hunters, one understudied aspect to the Rebellion is the continued role of allied newspapers in organizing rebellion in the Canadas and subsequently sustaining it in exile. The article provides an overview of the “patriot press” and how it helped delineate the patriot movement in exile. In the press, terms and language associated with the Patriot Hunters provided a tool to unite patriots. While some patriot editors expressed aversion to secrecy, some of those same editors now used references to secret organizing as ploys to reassure readers that they were part of a larger, highly active, and highly successful organization committed to Canadian independence—even if that was not true.

Two genealogists, Cozy Palmer in Dallas, Texas and Mike Kehoe in Richmond, Utah, unbeknownst to each other, were simultaneously researching the family of John Berry who fought and was captured at the Battle of the Windmill in 1838 and were not making much progress. Together, their research has led to a better understanding of the life of John Berry prior to his involvement in the Patriot War and to the discovery of the life that John Berry could have had if it were not for his involvement in the conflict.

Filled with a heightened sense of duty to eliminate the British from North America, Hiram Sharp, like many young Americans, joined a Hunters’ Lodge and fought with them in the Battle of the Windmill at Prescott where he was captured and then deportated to Van Diemen’s Land. His quest unfulfilled, Sharp ultimately forged a new path in another British colony at the far ends of the earth and helped bring about the form of democracy that both Canada and Australia share and enjoy today.

James Milne Aitchison was a privileged child in rural Scotland, a troubled young man in Edinburgh, a failed immigrant in Upper Canada, a Patriot raider at the Battle of Windsor in December 1838, a Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania) convict, and a colonist in what is now Victoria State, Australia. This article explores Aitchison’s many ‘lives’, drawing on fifty years of the author’s research-findings including material from the recent rescue of a cache of Aitchison documents from an abandoned house in Scotland.

Between December 1837 and December 1838, there were at least 14 recorded armed and unsanctioned incursions from United States into Upper Canada undertaken by what was referred to as the “Patriot Army.” Its intention was to overthrow what was seen by some as “oppression” and “British tyranny.” While none of these raids were successful, over 1,000 men involved with these raids were arrested, many of whome were charged with piratical invasion/high treason. One of those men was Chauncey Sheldon. This is his story.
