Play was serious business. By entertaining themselves in many ways in the many public houses of Upper Canada, tavern-goers defined and enacted the contours of social power in this colonial society. As we see them “throwing sticks and stones,” playing “sleight of hand tricks,” dancing jigs and “8 reels,” or “gambling and drinking around a large table,” we see that play was a defining part of a social world linked to the tavern. Play was a means through which tavern-goers bound themselves together, but a means also, and paradoxically, through which they could define social distance and cultural space.

En prenant part aux différentes formes de divertissement public qui leur étaient offertes dans le Haut-Canada, les participants définissaient les contours du pouvoir social dans cette société coloniale. Jouer aux « bâtons et pierres », faire des tours de prestidigitation, danser des « jigs » et des « reels », jouer à des jeux de hasards ou boire autour d’une grande table, tous ces divertissements aidaient à déterminer une structure sociale liée à la taverne. What Upper Canadians in the first half of the nineteenth century thought of as entertainment was fundamentally shaped by their class and their gender. While for many, the local tavern was a natural site to socialize it held little appeal for the cultured gentlewoman. Whether living on a backwoods farm or presiding over a big house in town, the wives and daughters of prominent Upper Canadians and gentlemen farmers consciously embraced the genteel leisure of the domestic circle. They sought companionship from others of their rank and sensibilities; and they enjoyed those diversions that both reflected their personal tastes and interests, but also symbolized their essential identity—gentlewomen of the empire.

Upper Canadians were avid participants in “entertainment.” They took part as spectators and participants in a wide variety of activities that, on one level, provided an opportunity for leisure and social interaction. However, for historians, the type and dialogue surrounding them also played another, somewhat more significant, role. As this paper argues, the many forms of public and private amusement available in Kingston, Ontario, between 1815 and 1837 provide a barometer of the social and political atmosphere of the town.

The American Revolution not only divided families, friends, and neighbours; it also gave rise to new communities. For Mohawks and loyalists who campaigned together out of Fort Niagara, the war forged them into a multi-ethnic military community. Survivors who resigned themselves to exile in scattered settlements across Upper Canada maintained their distinct community through regular rounds of private and semipublic celebrations – parties, reunions, militia musters – and commonplace acts of hospitality. These forms of entertainment preserved familiar social arrangements in an alien environment, but they also provoked a challenge from the colonial government which sought to impose a conservative order on the province.

La Révolution américaine divisa familles, amis, voisins, mais elle fut aussi à l’origine de la formation de nouvelles communautés. La guerre rassembla, par exemple, dans une communauté multiethnique les Mohawks et les Loyalistes qui avaient combattus ensemble à Fort Niagara. Ceux qui, après la Révolution, se résignèrent à l’exil et s’établirent dans le Haut-Canada, s’efforcèrent aussi de maintenir un sens de communauté en organisant des réunions privées ou semi-publiques, des fêtes, des assemblées, des rassemblements de miliciens, ou simplement en s’accueillant les uns chez les autres. Ces différentes formes de loisirs permirent de préserver des structures sociales familières dans un environnement étranger; mais elles présentèrent aussi un défi que releva le gouvernement colonial, celui-ci cherchait en effet à imposer un « ordre conservateur » dans la province.
