Ramsay Cook (1931-2016) a réécrit l’histoire du Canada. Profondément mal à l’aise face au nationalisme, à l’instar de son héros intellectuel George Orwell, il a défendu avec force le pluralisme. Sa contribution la plus célèbre à l’historiographie canadienne réside dans la notion d’« identités limitées », qu’il a affinée tout au long de sa carrière sans jamais y renoncer. Il a également fait du fédéralisme, du bilinguisme, du multiculturalisme et des droits des minorités les meilleures garanties de la diversité. C’est là que réside l’essence même de l’historien Ramsay Cook.
Abstract
Ramsay Cook (1931–2016) rewrote Canadian history. Distinctly uncomfortable with nationalism, like his intellectual hero George Orwell, he insisted on pluralism. His best-known contribution to Canadian historical writing was the idea of limited identities, which he refined across the length of his career but never abandoned. He also embraced federalism, bilingualism, multiculturalism, and minority rights as the best guarantees of difference. Herein lies the distilled essence of Ramsay Cook the historian.
