“Look at This Great Alice in Wonderland Dress I Found!” Repairing arguments and hearts with Catherine Hundleby

Abstract

This essay offers a reflective and personal exploration of philosophical friendship, feminist scholarship, and Catherine Hundleby’s transformative work in argumentation theory. Anchored by a metaphysically “magical” road trip to a FEMMSS conference, I trace the evolution of my intellectual and personal bond with Hundleby, sparked by an admiration for Moulton’s groundbreaking article, “A Paradigm of Philosophy: The Adversary Method.” I contextualize our engagement with feminist critiques of adversarial thinking and highlight Hundleby’s advances in argument repair. I also discuss her innovative work with Beverley Anger on the Ad Stuprum fallacy that examines the intersection of sexuality, power, and argumentation. Through personal anecdotes, theoretical insights, and analysis of Hundleby’s TEDX talk, I celebrate her commitment to inclusive, non-adversarial reasoning and feminist mentorship. Ultimately, the essay honors Hundleby’s legacy—her capacity to repair arguments and hearts—as a model for philosophical inquiry and friendship.

Cet essai propose une exploration introspective et personnelle de l'amitié philosophique, des études féministes et de l'oeuvre transformatrice de Catherine Hundleby en théorie de l'argumentation. À travers le récit d’un voyage en voiture aux accents métaphysiques, menant à une conférence de la FEMMSS, j'y retrace l'évolution de mon lien intellectuel et personnel avec Hundleby, lien scellé par notre admiration commune pour l'article fondateur de Moulton, « A Paradigm of Philosophy: The Adversary Method». Je situe notre engagement commun par rapport aux critiques féministes de la pensée contradictoire, je souligne les avancées de Hundleby en matière de réparation des arguments et j'aborde son travail novateur avec Beverley Anger sur le sophisme de l'ad stuprum, qui examine l'intersection de la sexualité, du pouvoir et de l'argumentation. À partir d’anecdotes personnelles, de réflexions théoriques et d’une analyse de sa conférence TEDx, je rends hommage à son engagement en faveur d'un raisonnement inclusif et non contradictoire, ainsi que d'un mentorat féministe.
