The Gerald S. Doyle Songsters and the Politics of Newfoundland Folksong

Abstract

The textual contents of the first two editions of St.John’s businessman Doyle’s widely distributed booklets are examined. The focus is upon their relation to political and social ideas and events. In each edition, Doyle printed songs from Newfoundland’s past as a commentary on its present, choosing those which best represented his own perspective. Today a significant number of these songs are still recognized as central to the canon of Newfoundland folksong.

Cet article examine le contenu textuel des chansons populaires des deux premières éditions des livrets — très largement distribués — de monsieur Doyle, homme d’affaires bien connu de Saint-Jean de Terre-Neuve. L’accent est mis sur leur rapport avec les idées et les événements politiques et sociaux de l’époque. Dans chaque édition l’auteur, monsieur Doyle, imprimait des chansons anciennes pour faire un commentaire sur le présent, prenant celles qui correspondaient le mieux avec ses idées. Aujourd’hui encore bon nombre de ces chansons sont reconnues comme étant centrales au répertoire de la chanson folklorique de Terre-Neuve.
