Résumé
Les travaux sur le don de sang ont jusqu’à maintenant privilégié l’étude des variables individuelles d’un point de vue démographique et psychologique (les motivations au don, par exemple). Pourtant, les notions actuelles de géographie sociale et de la santé sont tout à fait à propos pour l’étude des donneurs de sang québécois. Cette étude vise trois objectifs principaux : 1) analyser la répartition spatiale des dons de sang au Québec ; 2) analyser les distances séparant les lieux de résidence des lieux de collecte ; 3) mettre en relation le profil sociodémographique des municipalités régionales de comté (MRC) avec les nombres de donneurs et les fréquences de dons de sang. La méthode fait appel aux systèmes d’information géographique et à la statistique descriptive (corrélation, analyse de classification) pour explorer la géodémographie du don de sang sur une période de cinq ans (2003-2008). Les résultats mettent en valeur le rôle de certaines variations régionales entre les milieux urbains et ruraux et démontrent l’apport important des banlieues dans la réserve collective de sang. À partir de ces constats, certaines pistes de réflexion et d’action sont avancées, toutes en lien avec l’objectif ultime d’assurer un approvisionnement de sang continu et à long terme.

Abstract
Research on blood donation has until now focused on individual variables of a demographic or psychological nature, such as donor motivation. However, current concepts in social and health geography are relevant to the study of blood donors in Quebec. The present study has three main objectives : 1) analyze the spatial distribution of blood donation in Quebec, 2) analyze the distances between residences and collection sites, and 3) examine the relation between the socio-demographic profiles of regional county municipalities (MRC) and the number of donors and frequency of blood donations. The methodology draws on geographic information systems and descriptive statistics (correlations, K-means) to explore the geo-demographics of blood donations over a 5-year period (2003-2008). The results highlight several regional variations between urban and rural areas and demonstrate the important contribution of suburban areas to the maintenance of the collective blood reserve. From these findings, some lines of thought and future actions are discussed, all relative to the ultimate goal of ensuring a continuing long term supply of blood.

Resumen
Los trabajos sobre el don de sangre han privilegiado, hasta la fecha, el estudio de variables individuales desde un punto de vista demográfico y psicológico, (ej. motivación al don). Las actuales nociones de geografía social y de salud son aptas al estudio de donadores de sangre quebequenses. Este estudio enfoca tres objetivos principales : 1) Analizar la repartición espacial de donaciones de sangre en Quebec; 2) Analizar las distancias que separan los lugares de residencia de los lugares de colecta; y 3) Relacionar el perfil socio demográfico de las municipalidades regionales administrativas (MRC) con la cantidad de donadores y la frecuencia de donaciones de sangre. La metodología utiliza sistemas de información geográfica y estadística descriptiva (correlación K-means), para explorar la geodemografía de la donación de sangre durante cinco años (2003-2008). Los resultados hacen sobresalir el rol de ciertas variaciones regionales entre medios urbanos y rurales, demostrando así la contribución importante de la población periférica en la reserva colectiva de sangre. De esta constatación surgen pistas de reflexión y de acción para asegurar un aprovisionamiento continuo y de larga duracion, de sangre.
