Résumé
Les métropoles contemporaines, qui se caractérisent notamment par une plus grande mobilité des habitants, par l’étalement urbain et par l’établissement de nouvelles hiérarchies entre les principales composantes de leur territoire, soulèvent une série de controverses sociales et politiques relativement à leur avenir. Cela inspire une réflexion exploratoire sur la portée des choix individuels et collectifs en ce qui a trait à la viabilité des formes que prennent aujourd’hui ces milieux de vie. Le texte est subdivisé en trois parties. Dans un premier temps, j’évoque l’évolution des métropoles contemporaines et tente de dégager quelques facteurs explicatifs. Dans un deuxième temps, j’examine deux controverses importantes en ce qui a trait à leur évolution dans le contexte nord-américain. Enfin, je traite des implications politiques de ces controverses en référence à la démocratie locale.

Abstract
Within the contemporary context, city-regions that are characterized, among other things, by an increased mobility of their residents, urban sprawl and the definition of new hierarchies between the main components of their territory must face a series of social and political controversies regarding their future. This paper should be considered an exploratory reflection concerning the effect of individual and collective choices upon the viability of forms taken by these urban environments. The article is subdivided into three parts. Firstly, I consider the evolution of city-regions and try to isolate some explanatory factors. Secondly, I look at two major controversies concerning the evolution of city-regions within the North American context. Finally, I deal with the political consequences of these controversies as regards local democracy.
