This article maps the relationship between moving images and the documentation of human and environmental changes through the case of the Grenfell Mission of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Labrador Institute’s collection of never-released film footage of the Grenfell Mission constitutes a distinct media environment that opens up ways of thinking about environmental historiography as a practice that incorporates “media-specificity” into its modes of operation and argumentation. This approach asks us to examine not only how images of the environment have been produced, circulated, and received over the course of time, but also how these environments were produced as distinct, medium-specific entities in their own right.

Cet article établit les liens entre des images animées et la documentation de changements anthropiques et environnementaux à partir du cas de la mission de Grenfell, à Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador. Les films d’archives inédits de la mission de Grenfell, qui font partie de la collection du Labrador Institute, constituent un univers médiatique remarquable qui élargit notre façon de concevoir l’historiographie environnementale comme une pratique qui incorpore la « spécificité des médias » dans ses modes de fonctionnement et d’argumentation. Cette approche exige que l’on examine non seulement comment les images de l’environnement ont été produites, diffusées et reçues au fil du temps, mais aussi comment ces environnements ont été produits en tant qu’entités à part entière spécifiques au médium.

Based on an examination of travel narratives and promotional publications, this article suggests that the romantic image of Cape Breton Island as a bastion of traditional Highland culture can be traced to the 1870s with the dawning of American antimodernism. American publications continued to feature somewhat condescending portraits of a people “far removed from the modern age,” but they also expressed admiration for a way of life that was tied to tradition and close to nature. This longing, followed by the re-emergence of the traditional image of the heroic Highland warrior, occurred well before Premier Angus L. Macdonald began his “tartanizing” campaign for the province as a whole in the 1930s.

S’appuyant sur l’examen de récits de voyage et de publications promotionnelles, cet article suggère que l’image romantique du Cap-Breton en tant que bastion de la culture traditionnelle des Highlands remonte aux années 1870, à l’aube de l’antimodernisme américain. Les publications américaines continuèrent de présenter des portraits plutôt condescendants de sa population « éloignée de l’ère moderne », mais elles exprimaient aussi une admiration pour son mode de vie lié à la tradition et en communion avec la nature. Cette nostalgie, suivie par la réapparition de l’image traditionnelle du guerrier héroïque des Highlands, se fit sentir bien avant que le premier ministre provincial Angus L. Macdonald ait amorcé sa campagne de « tartanisation  » de l’ensemble de la province dans les années 1930.

Fought during the War of 1812, the Shannon-Chesapeake naval battle was one of the most important cultural events in Halifax’s history. The Shannon’s victory celebrations in 1813 sparked an unprecedented display of colonial patriotism and literature in the British North American context. This event remained at the forefront of public memory, history, art, and music throughout the 19th century. As personal connections to the battle faded at the turn of the 20th century, local authors such as Archibald MacMechan combined with historic sites organizations and the newly established Canadian Navy to keep its memory alive through commemorations and anniversaries

La bataille navale entre le Shannon et le Chesapeake, livrée au cours de la guerre de 1812, fut l’un des plus importants événements culturels dans l’histoire d’Halifax. Les célébrations saluant la victoire du Shannon en 1813 suscitèrent un élan sans précédent de patriotisme colonial et de création littéraire dans le contexte de l’Amérique du Nord britannique. Cet événement demeura au premier plan dans la mémoire publique, l’histoire, les arts et la musique tout au long du 19e siècle. À mesure que les acteurs et les témoins de la bataille disparurent au tournant du 20e siècle, des auteurs de la région, tel Archibald MacMehan, joignirent leurs efforts à ceux de la Marine canadienne et d’organismes responsables de lieux historiques pour en perpétuer le souvenir par des commémorations et des anniversaries.

Empruntant au sociologue Fernand Dumont son concept de «  regroupement par référence », l’auteur trace dans cet article une synthèse de l’évolution synchronique et diachronique du construit référentiel des gens du Madawaska. Il montre qu’un sentiment d’appartenance singulier de même qu’une conscience nationale acadienne y cohabitent depuis au moins le dernier quart du 19e siècle. Il conclut en défendant l’idée que l’appropriation référentielle par dérision du terme « brayon », édifié en référence par des promoteurs touristiques, s’impose, ne postulant aucun projet de société, comme un régionalisme à vocations économiques.

Borrowing the sociologist Fernand Dumont’s concept of “grouping by referenceˮ, the author provides in this article a summary of the synchronic and diachronic evolution of the collective identification of Madawaska residents. He shows that a distinctive sense of belonging as well as an Acadian national consciousness has always prevailed in the region since the last quarter of the 19th century. He concludes by arguing that the appropriation of the pejorative term “brayonˮ, as constructed largely by tourism promoters, represents – in the absence of any political project – a strictly economic form of regionalism.

This article examines the renegotiation of nursing practice in the Maritime provinces in the mid-20th century. The rapidly growing number of nursing assistants in these years was both a response to the inadequate supply of registered nurses and the expansion of hospitals that characterized these years. Nursing assistants were a heterogeneous category of labour that had a long history within hospitals. But while it is readily acknowledged that nursing assistants have been important to nursing practice, there have been few analyses of nursing assistants. This study seeks to redress this imbalance and expand our collective understanding of the full spectrum of hospital-based labour.

Cet article examine la redéfinition de la pratique infirmière dans les Provinces maritimes au milieu du 20^esiècle. L’augmentation rapide du nombre d’infirmières auxiliaires au cours de cette période se produisit en réaction à la fois à l’offre insuffisante d’infirmières immatriculées et à l’expansion des hôpitaux qui ont caractérisé ces années. Les infirmières auxiliaires formaient une catégorie hétérogène de main-d’œuvre qui était présente depuis longtemps au sein des hôpitaux. Si l’on reconnaît volontiers que les infirmières auxiliaires ont joué un rôle important pour la pratique infirmière, rares toutefois sont les analyses consacrées aux infirmières auxiliaires. Cette étude veut corriger cette lacune et améliorer notre compréhension collective de la main-d’œuvre hospitalière dans toute sa diversité.
