Résumé
Comme l’ont souligné les critiques de L’amant du lac, si les personnages du roman sont enracinés dans la région même de l’Abitibi, ils sont, aussi et surtout, présentés comme étant indissociables du lac Abitibi et de la sensualité inhérente à celui-ci. Cependant, les derniers chapitres du roman racontent une autre histoire. Cette histoire est celle de Gabriel, l’un des principaux personnages, qui se rend volontairement en Europe pour se battre aux côtés des alliés durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. En portant une attention à l’« ailleurs » de ce roman, cet article aborde l’imbrication entre la guerre et l’histoire d’amour, et souligne l’importance du choix que Gabriel fait de retourner vers Wabougouni qui est demeurée au lac Abitibi. Par le fait même, cet article analyse l’engagement du roman par rapport aux questions de la conscription et à celles liées aux déceptions vécues par les soldats autochtones après la guerre. En tenant compte de l’agression sexuelle subie par Gabriel à Paris et de celle que Zagkigan Ikwè subit à Pointe-aux-Pins des années plus tôt, cet article met en relief la violence sous-jacente au projet colonial et souligne la complexité de ces relations entre la France, le Québec et les peuples autochtones.
Abstract
As scholarship on L’amant du lac (The Lover, the Lake) has pointed out, if the characters of the novel are rooted in the Abitibi region, they are also and above all presented as being inseparable from the lake and the sensuality inherent in it. The final chapters of the novel, however, tell another story, that of Gabriel, one of the main characters, who volunteers to fight in Europe alongside the Allies during World War II. In turning critical attention to this “elsewhere” of the novel, this article explores the imbrication of war story and love story, and underlines the significance of Gabriel’s ultimate choice to return to Wabougouni on the shores of Lake Abitibi. It analyses the novel’s engagement with the question of conscription as well as with the inequities lived by Indigenous soldiers after the war. In bearing witness to the sexual assault which Gabriel experiences in Paris and which Zagkigan Ikwè experiences years earlier in Pointe-aux-Pins, the article addresses the violence underlying the colonial project and the complexity of colonial relations between France, Quebec and Indigenous peoples.

Como lo han señalado los críticos de L’amant du lac, aunque los personajes de la novela están enraizados en la propia región de Abitibi, también se los presenta, sobre todo, como inseparables del lago Abitibi y de su inherente sensualidad. Sin embargo, los capítulos finales de la novela cuentan otra historia. Se trata de la historia de Gabriel, uno de los personajes principales, que se marcha voluntariamente a Europa para luchar junto a los Aliados en la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Al centrarse en el “otro lugar” de esta novela, este artículo examina el entrelazamiento de la guerra y la historia de amor, y destaca la importancia de la decisión de Gabriel de regresar hacia Wabougouni, que se ha quedado en el lago Abitibi. Al mismo tiempo, este artículo analiza el compromiso de la novela con las cuestiones relacionadas a la conscripción y a las decepciones experimentadas por los soldados aborígenes después de la guerra. Teniendo en cuenta la agresión sexual sufrida por Gabriel en París y la sufrida por Zagkigan Ikwè en Pointe-aux-Pins años antes, este artículo pone de relieve la violencia subyacente al proyecto colonial y subraya la complejidad de las relaciones entre Francia, Quebec y los pueblos aborígenes.
