The Discours de la servitude volontaire boasts a long tradition of militant translations. We argue that these translations—whose introductions and paratextual materials often aim to enlist La Boétie to a specific political cause or ideology—must be taken into account when analyzing the Discours’ political content. As Miguel Abensour (2006) pointed out, the Discours’ elusive complexity fulfills a performative function, whose goal is to reveal the reader’s conception of freedom. It can be compared to a gamebook, in which most translators, editors and/or commentators get involved when publishing the text: they make particular interpretative choices and offer their specific reading of La Boétie’s thesis. In order to illustrate this peculiar interpretative dynamic, we briefly examine three case studies: an Italian (1944), an American (1942) and a Soviet (1952) translation. All three contain a strong political message and, we suggest, each of these messages brings to light a new path through La Boétie’s gamebook, developing a new vision of his intentionally paradoxical political theory.

Le Discours de la servitude volontaire a une longue tradition de traductions militantes. Nous soutenons que ces traductions – dont les introductions et les documents paratextuels visent souvent à associer La Boétie à une cause ou une idéologie politique spécifique – doivent être prises en compte lors d’une analyse du contenu politique du Discours. Comme le souligne Miguel Abensour (2006), la complexité insaisissable du Discours répond à une fonction performative, dont le but est de révéler la conception de liberté du lecteur. Elle peut être comparée à un livre-jeu, dans lequel la plupart des traducteurs, éditeurs et/ou commentateurs s’impliquent en publiant le texte : ils font leurs choix et proposent leur lecture spécifique de la thèse de La Boétie. Afin de donner un aperçu de cette dynamique interprétative particulière, nous examinons brièvement trois études de cas : une traduction italienne (1944), une traduction américaine (1942) et une traduction soviétique (1952). Toutes les trois véhiculent un message politique fort. Nous avançons que chacun de ces messages met en lumière une nouvelle piste dans le livre-jeu de La Boétie, en développant une nouvelle virtualité de sa théorie politique volontairement paradoxale.

Sabahattin Ali (1907-1948) is a prominent figure in Turkish literary history. He was not only a renowned writer and journalist but also a notable translator. He was one of the founding members of the state-sponsored Translation Bureau (1940-1966). He translated many books, short stories, and articles from German into Turkish, both within and outside the Bureau. In the 1930s and 1940s, however, his socialist and Marxist convictions came to the forefront. He was imprisoned several times for disseminating socialist and communist propaganda. The periodicals he published and the works he wrote were banned and confiscated by the government. Despite the persecution he suffered, Ali held to his belief that socialism (and in particular, Marxism) was the only path toward national development and the only solution to the social and economic problems of the country. With this motivation in mind, he aimed to disseminate leftist ideas in the Turkish culture by way of translation. Even though Ali was an effective and productive translator, his translation-related activities have not attracted adequate attention among researchers. This study, therefore, aims to reinstate Sabahattin Ali as a translator, as well as a political and cultural agent. By referring to the concepts of “culture repertoire,” “resistance,” and “culture planning” proposed by Itamar Even-Zohar (1997, 2002), it explores Ali’s resistance to the culture planning project of the single-party era of 1923-1945 and his attempts to develop an alternative repertoire of leftist works through translation. To give a wider picture of his ideologically motivated translational activities, certain primary sources available on Sabahattin Ali are analyzed, such as his published correspondence and the memoirs of his close circle of family and friends, which testify to his translation-related practices, to his political views and endeavours, as well as to the socio-political climate of the 1930s and 1940s in Turkey.

Sabahattin Ali (1907-1948) est une figure éminente de l’histoire littéraire turque. Il était non seulement un écrivain et un journaliste renommé, mais aussi un traducteur remarquable. Il a été l’un des membres fondateurs du Bureau de la traduction (1940-1966), financé par l’État. Il a traduit de nombreux livres, nouvelles et articles de l’allemand vers le turc, tant à l’intérieur qu’à l’extérieur du Bureau. Dans les années 1930 et 1940, cependant, ses convictions socialistes et marxistes se sont retrouvées au premier plan. Il a été emprisonné à plusieurs reprises pour avoir fait de la propagande socialiste et communiste. Les périodiques qu’il a publiés et les oeuvres qu’il a écrites ont été interdits et confisqués par le gouvernement. Malgré la persécution qu’il a subie, Ali est resté fidèle à sa conviction que le socialisme (et le marxisme) était la seule solution au développement national et aux problèmes sociaux et économiques du pays. Avec cette idée en tête, il a cherché à diffuser les idées de gauche dans la culture turque au moyen de la traduction. Même si Ali était un traducteur efficace et productif, ses activités liées à la traduction n’ont pas suffisamment attiré l’attention des chercheurs. Cette étude vise donc à réhabiliter Sabahattin Ali en tant que traducteur et agent politique et culturel. En nous référant aux concepts de « répertoire culturel », de « résistance » et de « planification culturelle » proposés par Itamar Even-Zohar (1997, 2002), nous explorons la résistance d’Ali au projet de planification culturelle de l’ère du parti unique (1923-1945), et ses tentatives de développer un répertoire alternatif d’oeuvres gauchistes par le biais de la traduction. Afin de donner une image complète de ses activités de traduction motivées par l’idéologie, nous nous penchons sur certaines sources primaires disponibles sur Sabahattin Ali tels que sa correspondance publiée et les mémoires de son entourage proche, qui témoignent de ses pratiques liées à la traduction, de ses opinions et engagements politiques, ainsi que du climat sociopolitique des années 1930 et 1940 en Turquie.

This article presents some research on translation during the occupation of Norway by Nazi Germany (1940-1945). It seeks to add new insight to the body of knowledge from recent research that has drawn attention to literary translation during wartime or under military occupation in countries such as Belgium, Germany, and France. Focusing on the regulation of translated literature that was implemented by Nazi authorities during the occupation, the article first describes the process of how this regulation came about and, second, how publishers interacted with Nazi officials in their attempts to navigate the new policy. The main source of data is archival material from the Nazi-installed Ministry of Culture and Popular Enlightenment, notably that of the sub-department for literary affairs, the Literature and Library Office. By investigating this material, the article aims to shed new light both on the particularities of the origin of the censorial system implemented during the occupation of Norway and on its ideological implications, thus adding Norwegian data to previous studies on the politics of translation stemming from Nazi ideology.

Cet article se penche sur la traduction littéraire sous l’occupation de la Norvège par l’Allemagne nazie (1940-1945). Il vise à ajouter des informations nouvelles au corpus de connaissances issues de recherches récentes axées sur la traduction littéraire en temps de guerre ou pendant l’occupation militaire dans des pays comme la Belgique, l’Allemagne et la France. Se concentrant sur la réglementation en matière de traduction littéraire mise en oeuvre par les autorités nazies pendant l’occupation, il s’attarde dans un premier temps sur le processus de création de cette réglementation et, dans un deuxième temps, sur la manière dont les éditeurs ont interagi avec les autorités nazies, afin de composer avec cette nouvelle législation. Les sources principales du présent article proviennent des archives du ministère de la Culture et de l’Éducation publique (établi par les autorités nazies), notamment de son sous-département des affaires littéraires, le Bureau de la littérature et des bibliothèques. L’objectif de la recherche dans les archives est d’apporter un éclairage nouveau sur les particularités de l’origine du système de censure mise en oeuvre pendant l’occupation de la Norvège et sur ses implications idéologiques, d’une part, et, de l’autre, d’ajouter des données de la Norvège aux études antérieures sur la politique de traduction fondée sur l’idéologie nazie.

Le but de cet article est d’étudier la réception critique de deux traductions de textes liés au surréalisme à la fin du franquisme, ainsi que leur processus de censure, dans le contexte de l’apparition de nouvelles maisons d’édition et de mouvements étudiants engagés. En effet, la traduction et la réception des livres d’André Breton en Espagne peuvent être perçues comme des signes de l’ouverture de la société espagnole qui s’amorce dans les années 1960 et qui annonce la fin de ce régime autoritaire et la transition démocratique du pays. À son échelle, elles prennent place parmi d’autres manifestations de cette ouverture : le tourisme, le pluralisme politique, l’influence du marxisme et une tolérance religieuse plus grande, entre autres. Nous présentons les différentes maisons d’édition désireuses de traduire et de publier des livres de cet auteur surréaliste, taxé de marxiste et donc en totale opposition avec les opinions du gouvernement franquiste. Nous nous focalisons ensuite sur deux de ses textes clés : Manifiestos del surrealismo (1969) et El surrealismo. Puntos de vista y manifestaciones (1972), afin de connaître leur accueil dans ce pays par la critique littéraire de l’époque, en nous appuyant sur les journaux ABC et Hoja del lunes de Barcelona, ainsi que sur les revues culturelles Triunfo et La Estafeta Literaria. Cela nous aidera à valider notre hypothèse selon laquelle ces traductions – et leur réception – pourraient être considérées comme un acte politique de la part de la population la plus engagée.

The aim of this article is to study the critical reception of two translations of texts related to surrealism at the end of Francoism, together with the censorship process they underwent, in the context of the emergence of new publishing houses and student movements. Indeed, the translation and reception of André Breton’s books in Spain can be seen as signs of the opening up of Spanish society that began in the 1960s, heralding the end of the authoritarian regime and the country’s transition to democracy. As such, these translations coincide with other manifestations of this opening up, including tourism, political pluralism, the influence of Marxism, and greater tolerance of religion. We begin by presenting the different publishing houses willing to translate and publish works by Breton, accused of being a Marxist and therefore in total opposition to the opinions of the Francoist government. We then focus on the reception of two of his key texts, Manifiestos del surrealismo (1969) and El surrealismo. Puntos de vista y manifestaciones (1972), by literary critics who published reviews in the newspapers ABC and Hoja del lunes de Barcelona, as well as in the magazines Triunfo and La Estafeta Literaria. This will enable us to validate our hypothesis that these translations – and their reception – can be seen as political acts on the part of the most militant members of the population.

This paper will apply a Bourdieusian theoretical framework to analyze the military field and evaluate the interpreting habitus that emerged during the U.S. military occupation of South Korea (1945-1948). Despite its position of military dominance within the military field, the United States Army Military Government in Korea (USAMGIK) was unable to assert the normal hierarchical structure of an occupational force during interpreted events. This provided interpreters with the freedom to, when necessary, actively intervene in interlingual exchanges rather than be limited to function as “conduits.” This paper theorizes that interpreting activity is a site for the recontextualization of social hierarchical relations and proposes that while dominant agents and institutions typically dictate the terms under which the norms of interpreting are (re)established, under certain conditions, empowered interpreters may challenge the authority of these dominant institutions and redefine the interpreting habitus.

Cet article mobilise un cadre théorique bourdieusien dans le but d’analyser le champ militaire et d’évaluer l’habitus d’interprétation qui est apparu pendant l’occupation militaire américaine de la Corée du Sud (1945-1948). Malgré sa position dominante dans le champ militaire, le gouvernement militaire de l’armée américaine en Corée (USAMGIK) n’a pu établir la structure hiérarchique standard d’une force d’occupation lors d’événements nécessitant des interprètes. Cette situation a donné aux interprètes la liberté, si nécessaire, d’intervenir activement dans des échanges interlinguaux plutôt que d’être limités à fonctionner comme des « canaux ». Cet article théorise l’activité d’interprétation comme site de la recontextualisation des rapports hiérarchiques sociaux et propose que, bien que les agents et institutions dominants dictent généralement les conditions dans lesquelles les normes d’interprétation sont (ré)établies, dans certains cas, des interprètes devenu(e)s autonomes peuvent contester l’autorité de ces institutions dominantes et redéfinir l’habitus d’interprétation.

L’interprétation répond à des besoins de compréhension mutuelle qui surgissent au sein d’une communauté au niveau national ou international. Elle s’inscrit dans les différents contextes et situations qui caractérisent la vie des individus et donc de la société, ce qui implique un lien strict avec l’organisation et la vie de la « polis », de l’État. En ce sens l’interprétation se place dans le politique et le social, acquérant de cette manière une valeur d’acte politique. L’observation des conditions qui déterminent la nécessité de recourir à l’interprétation permet de distinguer entre un niveau supra-ordonné et un niveau subordonné. Le premier est le cadre historico-politique et spatio-temporel où naissent les besoins de communication interlinguistique et qui influence et oriente les services d’interprétation; le deuxième est le niveau de l’interprète, en tant qu’individu qui « choisit » quoi et pour qui traduire et dont l’engagement personnel permet de satisfaire ces mêmes besoins. Pour montrer l’imbrication de ces deux niveaux et mettre au jour la valeur politique de l’acte d’interprétation, nous nous pencherons sur l’interprétation dans le domaine judiciaire – en nous bornant à la situation en Italie – et sur l’interprétation en situation de conflit armé. Ces deux contextes s’avèrent emblématiques et capables de faire ressortir de manière percutante le caractère politique de la fonction d’interprète et de l’acte d’interprétation, à cause des conséquences qu’ils ont sur la vie des individus, de la société et de l’interprète lui-même.

Interpreting is meant to meet the needs for mutual understanding arising within a community at a national or international level. These needs derive from the various settings and situations that characterize society, as well as people’s lives, and are closely linked to the life and organization of the polis (the State). Interpreting therefore belongs to the political and social spheres; as such it is a political act. In order to analyze the conditions underlying the recourse to interpreting, a superordinate and a subordinate level may be identified. The former refers to the political, historical, and spatio-temporal situation in which interlingual communication needs arise and its impact on interpreting services. The latter refers to the interpreter as an individual who “chooses” what to interpret and for whom, and whose activity enables those communication needs to be met. In order to highlight the intertwined features of the two levels, as well as the political value of the interpreting act, this paper focuses on two areas: the legal field (with exclusive reference to Italy) and interpreting in conflict zones. Given their contexts and the impact they have on society and people’s lives, including the interpreter’s, these two areas can be seen as emblematic insofar as they forcefully reveal the political nature of both the interpreter’s role and the interpreting act.
