Collision and Collusion: Contrasting Representations of the Translator-Author Relationship in Two Contemporary Francophone Novels

Abstract

The article focuses on two novels (Brice Matthieussent’s 2009 Vengeance du traducteur and Jacques Poulin’s 2006 La Traduction est une histoire d’amour) which present apparently contradictory viewpoints on the role of the translator and translation through their distinctive use of both metaphors and meta-discourse on translation. Matthieussent’s novel is a revenge indeed, a postmodern tour de force where the notions of original, translation, source and target texts, author and translator, are blurred to the point of becoming irrelevant, shedding a whole new light on the concepts of faithfulness and creativity, and redefining typographical and cultural spaces. Presented as a translation by its narrator, Vengeance du traducteur is a discussion about translation, a metaphorical and symbolical deconstruction of the author-translator relationship, which creatively and cynically dissects power relations in the translation process, and questions the validity of the notions of author and translator, pointing out their absurdity. Poulin’s novel approaches the author-translator relationship more traditionally, portraying a young woman, Marine, the first-person narrator, planning to meet an author she admires, and become his translator. Though she is successful in this, few scenes focus on translation proper; instead the writer and translator must determine the owner of an abandoned kitten, using a cryptic note on its collar. They must find the right words to complete the clue, and also determine what these words truly mean. The cooperative, symbiotic connexion between the two outside their working relationship becomes a metaphor in itself for the process of translation; this in turn focuses a spotlight on the work of translating which is relegated to the background of this novel whose title announces it as central. Through careful dissection of all the novels’ elements, we will show how their mise-en-abîme of translating determines and undermines the perception and practice of literary translation.

Résumé

Cet article se concentre sur les représentations à première vue contradictoires du rôle du traducteur et de la traduction, et sur l’utilisation contrastive de métaphores et de métadiscours sur la traduction dans Vengeance du traducteur (2009) de Brice Matthieussent et La Traduction est une histoire d’amour (2006) de Jacques Poulin. Le roman de Matthieussent constitue bien une vengeance, une prouesse post-moderne dans laquelle les notions mêmes de texte original et de traduction, de texte source et cible, d’auteur et de traducteur, fusionnent au point de perdre toute forme de pertinence opérationnelle. Au passage, ce roman redéfinit les concepts de fidélité et de créativité et redessine les espaces culturels et typographiques. Présenté comme une traduction par son narrateur, Vengeance du traducteur est avant tout une réflexion sur la traduction, une déconstruction métaphorique et symbolique de la relation auteur-traducteur, qui dissèque les relations de pouvoir qui émergent du processus traductionnel, et qui va jusqu’à remettre en question la validité des notions d’auteur et de traducteur en en révélant toute l’absurdité. Le roman de Poulin appréhende la relation auteur-traducteur de manière plus traditionnelle ; il met en scène le personnage de Marine, qui narre l’action à la première personne et qui souhaite rencontrer un auteur qu’elle admire dans le but de devenir sa traductrice. Bien qu’elle arrive à ses fins, rares sont les scènes qui se focalisent sur la traduction elle-même ; à la place, l’auteur et sa traductrice doivent, grâce à un message cryptique attaché sur son collier, retrouver le propriétaire d’un chaton abandonné. Ils vont non seulement retrouver les mots manquants, effacés de l’indice, mais aussi leur donner un sens. Ce partenariat symbiotique, hors du cadre de leur travail, devient une métaphore du processus traductionnel : c’est cela qui met paradoxalement l’accent sur le travail de traducteur, relégué au second plan en dépit d’un titre qui en promet la centralité. Grâce à une analyse détaillée des deux romans, nous démontrons comment la mise en abîme de la traduction précise et subvertit la perception et la pratique de la traduction littéraire.
